Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Just curious....

I thought about moving DS to his own room/crib this weekend but started reading that baby should sleep in your room until 6 mos to lower the risk of SIDS because they regulate their breathing to yours and then mothers are more aware of the baby when it is in the room with them. DD is in a PNP in our room right now. I am kinda a freak about the SIDS thing, I have an angelcare monitor and have always been "on edge" about my kids be ok during the night. I put him on his back to sleep always, he is swaddled still but is not rolling over to his stomach yet, he isn't around smokers, no pets in the house. I am sure I am safe enough, but that isn't always enough to prevent it. Let me know what you are doing and what your opinions are....I don't think I moved DD out until after 6 mos but I am going back to work in 2 weeks and just thought having him in his own room would be nice. TIA!

Re: Just curious....

  • DS has been in his crib, in the nursery since he came home from the hospital. He is always swaddled, on his back, and we have the monitor to listen for him.

I definitely went in there to check often during the first few weeks, but he's done great without sleeping in our room. I didn't want to have to deal with transitioning.

  • My LO is still sleeping in our room,he is 5.5weeks old.I will be moving him into his room at 3months.I had read that at 2months the risk for sids is greatly reduced.I'm not so worried, he already has his naps in his cribs so it should be a smooth transition(knock on wood).

  • Six months seems a little extreme.  They can begin to form sleep habits before then so it may be difficult to make the transition after month 6.  My DS is 10 weeks and has been in his crib for about 2 weeks.  I have a video monitor so I can wake up, check to see that he is breathing, and go right back to sleep.

  • I moved lo into his own room at 5.5 weeks. I started as soon as his first sleep strech was longer. I didnt want to have to worry about him not wanting to transition. He has done fine since the first night. His room is right next to mine. The first few nights were rough, I didnt sleep much but he slept much better in his own room. I think we probably woke him up too!

Ditto this.... not sure how just being in the same room as them helps regulate their breathing...? Maybe if they slept ON you, but not just in the same room.

Anyway we have the Angel Care as well and it's great!

  • I appreciate all the responses and will probably continue on with the plan to move him to his own room. Again, thanks a bunch!

  • DD has been in her own room in her crib since we left the hospital. She's also been belly sleeping since she learned to roll over a month or 2 ago.

Do whatever you're comfortable with :) I know I sleep way better with DD in her own room, (so does she) when we travel and she's in our room none of us sleep!
