Adiana...Novasure...Vasectomy?

Anyone willing to share your experiences?  I've been reading up on the adiana & novasure procedures & am interested hearing from women who have done it.

What about vasectomy docs in the area?  Any recs?  Trying to decide who is going under the knife this year!

Thanks!

  • For us, the Vasectomy was an obvious choice. Less invasive. Fewer long term risks (no ectopic pregnancy). Insurance covers at almost 100% and it can be done in office. DH went to Dr Ma lon e. They gave him awesome drugs before and after. He was happy with the experience overall. DH highly recommends the large "Peas" icepack from CVS ;)

Also, the overall statistical chance of pregnancy with the vasectomy is almost nil. In my professional experience, I've now seen 3 women with their tubes tied get pregnant, all ectopic. Ectopic pregnancy can be fatal - especially in a woman who may not even consider the pain she is feeling to be a risk of pregnancy. There are no fatal risks of Vasectomy that I know of (except maybe infection).

And as horrible as it may sound, as one friend of mine at work put it "And then you know there won't ever be any half brother or sisters running around out there taking away from your kid's child support check".Surprise I work with a bunch of cynical 40-50 year old divorced women, many of whom have ex-husbands who married much younger women and are on family #2 :(  Actually, the woman in particular who gave me this advice, her husband started family #2 while they were still married... She had her tubes tied after their 4th together and says she always wishes he was the one who got snipped. Like I said, I realize it's not a nice thought but if one simple decision now has even the smallest chance of securing my children's financial future, why not Embarrassed As depressingly diabolical as it may be.

You crack me up. But, statistically speaking, this is so true...

  • One of Mike's friends actually talked him into the vasectomy. He had one, said it was no big deal, and that he liked not having to worry about whether his wife remembered to take a birth control pill, whether the prescription was filled on time, whether an antibiotic interfered with it, etc.

I am still on the pill to regulate my hormones (I have PCOS), and I was unwilling to have anything surgically done. I also had no interest in an IUD. So... given our situation, if we wanted something long term and permanent, vasectomy it was.

The procedure was fairly straightforward. He switched to boxer briefs to support his package, and he walked around with frozen peas in his pants for a while. No complications, no issues. Our insurance paid for all of it.

Oh, and if you go the vasectomy route, you can pay your husband back for any time he suggested sex at an inopportune time, like, say, when you were hugely pregnant and miserable or shortly after you'd given birth. I spent several days telling Mike "But I wanna have sex NOW. It's been a long time, and I don't WANT to wait a few more days. I need it NOW." Then I'd go into the other room and leave him sitting there with frozen peas in his pants. Because yes, I am that evil. Devil

  • I had an IUD, and it didn't agree with me, so my dr recommended Essure & Novasure. The procedure was done in my dr's office and only took a few minutes. I took a painkiller when I got home and slept the rest of the day. I continued on Advil for a few days for some mild cramping, but other than that, it was VERY easy. I'd highly recommend it! Permanent birth control and I most likely won't have a period anymore.

I have several friends that have had it done, and we've all been happy with it.

I love your responses.  Every time.

  • I had Essure done and it was so simple and didn't hurt a bit.  My OB said she had (at the time I was doing my Essure procedure) 3 current patients who were pregnant with vasectomy babies, which was enough for me to have the procedure done instead of my husband.  The chance of getting pregnant was too high.  ;)

Yeah... this was my other issue. I realize the odds of getting pg again are slim to none since DH was snipped and I'm on the pill, BUT... I wouldn't be heartbroken if one slipped past the goalie. Especially if it happens after I get my diamond bribe.

  • stories aside, my research was that vasectomy has a .15% failure rate (meaning it is 99.85% effective) and essure has a .2% failure rate.  (so 99.8% effective).  we opted to go with the option that has been around longer with a comparable efficacy rate.

i'm sure whatever you choose will be great for your family :)

(and for the record if one slips past the goalie i might be on the 5 o'clock news for losing my mind. haha)

But you're so right! At the time the understanding was that he would get clipped unless I needed a last minute c-section then I would have my tubes tied. Now that we ate no longer together, I kinda wish he would have gotten clipped. Now there is a chance he'll have more kids. I also wish I would have waited and done that thing where you don't get a period any more. Who needs those?

The percentage goes up for effectiveness once you've had the HSG test 3 months after Essure. There is absolutely NO way I can get pregnant now. I'd call that pretty damn effective... I'm pretty sure those stats Mollie quoted are for the time period for right after the initial procedure amd before the dye test.

My nightmare is DH getting fixed and then 10 years from now...when my kids are 19 and 14...and I'm 39...one will slip through and I get pregnant.  I would be devastated.  Nightmare indeed.  That's why I want both of us to get fixed, I don't want to take any chances.

  • Taytee, I told Mike your rationale for the husband getting fixed rather than the wife. He says you're hard core, and he wouldn't want to get on your bad side. Stick out tongue

  • You guys are all kind of awesome & thanks for the info!  I actually told DH that if I got fixed then he went through some mid life crisis & knocked up his "second wife" I would hunt him down & then our kiddos would be without both parents...so I totally get the rationale, lol.

Ideally, he'd get snipped & then I'd get the novasure done for extra measure & to eliminate these damn heavy periods.  Between the two procedures, I feel our chances are pretty good w/o either of us having extra hormones or foreign objects stuck in our bodies.  Essure just looks scary as hell so I prefer the super tiny silicone adiana, but I'd prefer to have nothing stuck in me at all...
