Baby Names

Thoughts about these boy names?

I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant and although my husband and I haven't found out what we're having yet (just a few more weeks!) I have a gut feeling we're having a boy. We're pretty decided on a girl's name (naturally!) but are having a difficult time with a boy's name.

We both like names that are slightly different, but not too wild. We also like names that have an obvious nickname, as we both feel that nicknames are inevitable at some point in baby's life.

Here's what we've narrowed it down to so far...

1. Lukas (yes, with a k)

2. Kaleb (nickname Kale)

3. Zander (nickname Zane)

4. Colton (nickname Colt or Cole)

5. Bennett (nickname Ben/Benny)

6. Kieran (love that name, but can't think of a nickname??)

7. Cade or Kade (no, not Caden/Kaden)

Thoughts? Commets? Suggestions? Not sure on middle names either. Eager for some feedback! :)

Thanks, ladies!

Re: Thoughts about these boy names?

  • 1. Lukas (yes, with a k) Decent name, just nms.

    2. Kaleb (nickname Kale) I like the spelling Caleb, and would never have thought of Kale as a nick name.

    3. Zander (nickname Zane) Once again, I prefer the spelling Xander...and I don't see it having a nick name at all.

    4. Colton (nickname Colt or Cole) Decent name, just nms.

    5. Bennett (nickname Ben/Benny) Decent name, like Benjamin better, but really like nn Ben.

    6. Kieran (love that name, but can't think of a nickname??) Love this name.  No nick name needed.

    7. Cade or Kade (no, not Caden/Kaden) Eh. Sounds like a last name to me...

  • Of your list, I like Lukas and Bennett...Bennett is my fav of your list, Lukas 2nd, Kieran 3rd.  Kaleb/Kale makes me think of vegetables, and I am not a fan of that spelling.  Colton and Cade are also trendy now (IMO as a teacher -- I have more than one of each of these names in my classes.)  Good luck:)

  • Lucas with a K because we would call him Luke, which is spelled with a K.

Kaleb with a K because we may call him Kale. My husband likes that name, and although I'm not sold on outright naming him Kale, I could do it (and actually like it much better) as a nickname.

Zander because, once again, we would probably end up calling him Zane at some point. Doesn't really work out with the X. I also just like the aesthetic looks of the name with a Z better.

    Thanks for the feedback! :)

  • 1. Lukas (yes, with a k) - Nice

    2. Kaleb (nickname Kale)- Not my style (NMS) at all

    3. Zander (nickname Zane)- NMS

    4. Colton (nickname Colt or Cole)Not a fan

    5. Bennett (nickname Ben/Benny)- Like Bennett w/the NN Ben

    6. Kieran (love that name, but can't think of a nickname??) Love it! No nn needed!

    7. Cade or Kade (no, not Caden/Kaden) - NMS

  • So hard being a teacher! I'm a teacher too and encounter so many names and I like, but can't imagine using because of the children I associate them with. Makes for a difficult time in naming a child!

Thanks for the feedback. Kieran is turning out to be more liked than I had anticipated. Love it!

Many Lucas' are nn Luke, you do not have to make the kid constantly have to correct the spelling of his given name because of it.

All in all, I think you are trying way to hard for nn here - the interesting spellings is just one example.

That said, Bennett is probably the one I would choose since a.) It is not spelled wrong and b.) it works with the actually nn you want to use.

  • I really like Caleb, but I don't like the K spelling or the nn Kale. Kale is a leafy green.

Since you're going with Kaleb nn Kale, my vote is for Bennett. I like Ben.

  • So many choices. So many opinions. I'm not sure what to think anymore. I have some major name-commitment issues! :/

  • I agree with pp - you're trying way too hard with those nns.  I think there are other boy names out there that have more obvious nns than these do.  I don't really understand Kaleb nn Kale or Zander nn Zane.

As for the names themselves, I don't like any of them, sorry.  They're just either too trendy or spelled oddly, and neither of those things are my style.

  • Kieran Michael?

    Benjamin Cole?

    Bennett Cole?

    Lukas Bryant?

Also like middle names Andrew and James.

  • 1. Bennett- I love this name and the nn Ben.

    2. Kaleb- though i prefer the spelling Caleb.

    3. Cade- I really like this one too, seems very masculine, but it may be too close to the trendy Caden

  • Bennett and Kieran, the others are not my style. And I don't see the need for nicknames.

  • Colton, Kieran, or Cade.

I would also choose either Zander or Zane.

I also think you're putting too much into the nicknames.  Nicknames can/will happen spontaneously, too.... pick the full name you really like.

  • 1. Lukas - I like Luke, but have never liked Lucas. I'm not sure what it is about it that turns me off though...

    2. Kaleb - I actually know two grown men who spell it with a K. The name has been overdone in my area, so it's kind of bleh to me now. Still a good name though.

    3. Zander - I like Alexander fairly well, but am not crazy about this "nickname." I do like Zane, although I would never use it myself.

    4. Colton - It's okay. I prefer Cole as a stand alone name.

    5. Bennett - NMS, but I wouldn't side eye it or anything.

    6. Kieran - Kind of cute. Definitely don't think it needs a nickname.

    7. Cade or Kade - I like it and Caden/Kaden :)

I think Bennett Cade or Cade Bennett would be a cute combination!

    1. Lukas (yes, with a k)- I like it spelled Lucas, you don't have to spell it with a 'k' to get the nn Luke.

    2. Kaleb (nickname Kale)- it is ok when spelled Caleb; don't like the nn Kale

    3. Zander (nickname Zane)- Like it spelled Xander, as a nn for Alexander; if you use Zander/Xander prefer the nn Zan/Xan

    4. Colton (nickname Colt or Cole)-don't like

    5. Bennett (nickname Ben/Benny)- ok, but don't like the nn Benny

    6. Kieran (love that name, but can't think of a nickname??)- nice name that doesn't need a nn

    7. Cade or Kade (no, not Caden/Kaden)- really dislike

I really like Keiran..Its my nephews middle name (Noah Keiran) and he is 18yrs old, it really suits him.

  • Don't butcher a spelling of a formal name to suit a nickname.  That is just silly.  Little Lucas can still be Luke and little Caleb can be Cale (or Kale).  Whatever.  Take a nod from the new Princess Kate (whose full name is Catherine).  You don't choose a spelling of the first name off of a possible nickname.  Especially when it makes it look odd.

As for your list - I like Lucas.  Bennet is my second choice.  The rest are nms.

  • I don't really understand everyone's opposition to nicknames.Obviously, I know that we can choose to call our son/daughter any nickname we want despite the spelling that we decide on. I like a more "modern" spelling for "traditional" names. Just my personal preference.

The more I hear Kieran, the more I like it. It's climbing to the top of my list.  And guess what? There's no nickname! Stick out tongue

  • 3. Zander (nickname Zane) This one makes me think of the author Zane...Writes AA erotic books..So Id use the x spelling.

    5. Bennett (nickname Ben/Benny) I like Bennett

    6. Kieran (love that name, but can't think of a nickname??) I also love this name.

I don't really get this. ^^ I don't like how Kate is a nn for Catherine. What is wrong with Cate? I know there are tons of nicknames that are spelled differently than the full names...but, OP, I get the reasons for your choices. It really IS up to you and your SO.

My faves on your list are: Bennett, Kieran & Cade. Big Smile

  • I love your list. I have always LOVED the name Zander only with a Z. I don't like the way it looks with an X, reminds me of Xavier which is NMS. When it was one of my top runners I would also  have people say, "well are you going to name him Alexander though because then you should spell it with an X" No, I am not naming him Alexander because then everyone will end up calling him Alex and that is too Plain Jane for me. I never thought of calling him Zane, I think you just gave me a new appreciation for that name :-)

I also love Cade/Kade and not Caden/Kaden. I tend to like names that are short and strong. I also like Cain too.

I had a friend who had a little boy named Caleb and she always used to say his name in such a cutesy way that I could never picture that name on a man but having a NN like Kale just sent him into the cool kid group ;-)

I like the name Colton too but bad association with a last name that sounds a lot like it so it's been permanently band from my list :-/

I think you have a great list going here. I am anxious to see what your final choice is. Do you have any girl names up your sleeve? You seem to like the same names I do, just curious.

  • Bennett or Kieran. I really don't like any of the others.
  • Carolyn, you kind of made my day! :)

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm glad someone doesn't think I'm crazy!

I think as of right now, hubby and I both have Kieran topping our list. Middle name is still undecided, but will be one of the following: Michael, Andrew, Lukas, or James.

We are pretty set on Mara for a girl, but again, haven't fully decided on a middle name. My husband doesn't mind what we end up going with for a middle name, so it's kind of up to me. But, I'm thinking Elizabeth or Kate.

Thanks again, you're too sweet! :)

Great name choices. Mara Kate seems to have a great ring to it but I don't think you can go wrong either way. Good luck!
