3rd Trimester

What goes on the mattress?

FTM, so I wanted to verify with everyone exactly what IS suppose to go on the crib mattress. I know no loose sheets or blankets, but at BRU they had mattress pads, waterproof covers, sheets, quilts, etc. I guess the quilt is more like a room throw decoration, but do I really need the other three?

The mattress is of a plastic-type cover. TIA

Re: What goes on the mattress?

  • I have a mattress cover that is waterproof under a sheet.

That is all that my dd sleeps on.

No blankets, quilts, bumpers or toys are in her crib.

  • I put on a good waterproof matress pad under my matress sheet. If your matress is already waterproof, put on a good absorbant pad anyways......

I think you just can cover the LO with a throw or your favorite blankets...Im not a big fan of the covers that come with the bedding sets; they seem too heavy for me and more so of a decoration peice that goes over the bed side. Just my opinion! :)

  • You are only supposed to do a mattress pad and a sheet, that's it, nothing else.  I used sleep sacks with DD during the cooler months cuz blankets are out too.

Ditto this. I know I have friends who do several stacks of sheets for quick night changes, but this is supposed to be a no-no as the mattress should be as firm as possible. We just have mattress pad, sheet, and ultimate crib sheet (the ultimate crib sheet I really only used the first several months with DD).

  • Exactly what PP's said. Waterproof cover with a sheet, maybe a sleep sack to keep LO from getting chilly.
  • We have a waterproof mattress and a fitted sheet.
  • We have a waterproof pad that goes on the matteress then a sheet.  Thats all.

yeah u cant do this....no blankets in the ccrib

  • our mattress is waterproof so no extra sheet was needed. We have a fitted sheet on there, and will swaddle LO for sleep time.

With DD we didnt use the covers or extra blankets and sheets until she was a confidant head mover who enjoyed tummy time without issues.

  • Are people using the bumpers that come in the bedding sets anymore?? I've heard they can be dangerous now but I don't like the idea of just having the hard bars there once baby starts moving around.

We're not supposed to anymore.  If you're concerned about the bars, you can pick up a breathable bumper.

  • I do a waterproof pad and just a fitted sheet.  Nothing that will bunch up or anything.

  • Like everyone said I use sleep sacks as well. The halo ones are the best and longer so I recommend those.

  • Which Halo sleep sacks are better... the ones where the babies arms are out or the swaddles with them tucked in? Someone told me their baby didn't like their arms tight to them and preferred sleeping with arms up.

The swaddle style worked perfect for us. DD hated having her legs swaddled tight, but didn't mind her arms. Plus the swaddle is just an extra piece that attaches to the back so it can be removed and then you just have a regular sleep sack.
