2012 top 100 baby names

Saw this floating around FB and thought I'd share:

The big list is down a bit; I'm liking that our favorite girl names so far aren't anywhere on there. :)

Re: 2012 top 100 baby names

  • I wanted to cry the other day when I saw the popularity of the 2011 names. Eleanor went from 116 to 12. We didn't pick Ella because it was too popular and now look at what we've got!

ETA: And even our "weird" name is on here! WTF!

  • Aww so sad that Amelia is on there!  But I still love the name!

  • Yay!  Our little man's name isn't on there :)
  • These are predictions for 2012, though right? Lol my girl name is on there...never in the world did I think it would be on any sort of popularity list!

  • MrsHo - what is your "weird" name?

  • One of the only boy names we are considering so far is Anthony, which I am surprised is not on there. I always thought it was pretty common, but I guess it's outdate. We always get a kick out of "Sadie," being on the girl list. It is so popular around here, these days, and my husband's grandma's name was Sadie (she is passed away).

  • The name Declan keeps entering my life...hubby brought this name to me like 6 weeks ago and I fell on the floor laughing thinking it sounded like a venereal disease. It's on the list!!!!

    I don't trust this list.

NO! This makes me want to cry. My husband is IN LOVE with the name "Eleanor" for a little girl. I'm OK with it...but it's spiking in popularity. He couldn't care less about popular names and gets mad every time I nix one because it's in the top 20 or 100. I've been hoping it would have dropped in 2011...I'm waiting for the official list...but god I hope you're wrong! (Not that I'm doubting you. Just not looking forward to that conversation with my husband. Would it be bad if I hoped for news of a boy at my A/S next week just to avoid that conversation? :P)

  • This isn't the real list. The Social Security lists don't come out until May of the following year. This is just someone's estimate on what MIGHT be popular in 2012 ;-)

MAY??? Well, crud. I guess I can't look at 2011 popularities in picking our name :P

I know :( It typically comes out around Mother's Day I want to say.

  • Yeah, this list is kinda ridiculous. I mean so many names are not on there that should be...

  • We were really going back and forth between Ella and Georgia, but with Ella being so popular...not sure we want to go that route now. I think Makenna is moving back on our list, and we may need to think of a few more choices.

    Thanks for posting this article!!

  • if you ever look at this site they don't actually relate to the SSA list at all in popularity. I would look at it more as top 100 trendy names then really most popular.

and Declan is an awesome name. If it wasn't going up in popularity we would totally use it. It's Elivs Costello's real name not a VD. ;)

Ella is VERY popular at the moment my niece is named Ella and there are two others in her preK.

  • Yeah, I think their compilation process is a little suspect.  I don't buy that Seraphina and Imogen make the top names in the US (Britain, maybe).

Bummed to see Oliver so high on the list, but it's been top 5 in Britain for some time and climbing over here.  Vivienne is nowhere, but the more traditional spelling (Vivian) is at the bottom of the top 100.

  • FYI ladies.... this woman bills herself as an expert in baby names for the wealthy and "culturally refined" . She wrote this book: https://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Ava-Aiden-Enlightened-Naming/dp/0312539150

I read an article by her a few days ago and one of her definitions of "culturally refined" is "people who don't eat at Applebee's". Her words, not mine. I'll see if I can find that article.

These are her predictions of "up and coming" names, NOT the actual popularity rank. I seriously doubt my daughter's name is going to go from number 1,400 on the Social Security index to 80 in 2012.

Cordelia. I'm still trying to get MH to agree to name this little girl Cordelia Cadence.

I know 3 babies that have recently received this name - it appears this list is a canadian list - I live in Canada - maybe thats the difference?

  • I had to laugh that Imogen is on the list.. not sure I trust it much! Our baby girl's name is on the unisex name list, but we've both loved her name for years and we're not changing it! :)

  • I had to laugh that Milo, which is currently in the mid 400's on the SSA name list from last year moved up to number 4 on this list, but yet still isn't starred as one of the "fastest rising names."

  • I know of a baby in California with this name! I think it has gotten much more popular since the music artist Imogen Heap has become more popular too.
