Nearing one month, nipples still sore

Anyone else have this problem?  I've been told she has a fine latch, she's just very inefficient.  I really don't want to use a nipple shield.  First off she hates them, secondly I don't want to wean from one later and go through the pain again.  If I pump it isn't so bad.  I swear, it's just one road block after another for us.

Re: Nearing one month, nipples still sore

  • If your nipples are sore, her latch isn't fine, IMO. Does it hurt the whole time or just at the very beginning?

Has she been checked for a tongue tie?

She's been checked.  Various pedi's all say no tongue tie.  One nipple hurts just about all the time, the other just hurts for a short bit when she starts nursing.

I'm so sick of feeling discouraged.  I'll have a couple good days, then a bad day like today where it just all goes wrong.  I'm totally able to see now why some moms EP and though I would love to be able nurse her, pumping is proving much easier than nursing still.

  • Have you been out to a bf support group or LLL meeting? I know it's hard to think about one more thing, but either of those always make me feel so much better in addition to the actual advice/help I got.

Are any positions better than others? Have you tried laid-back bf-ing

I had the twinge (toe-curling, but only a few seconds) at the start of each session for the first 3 or 4 weeks and then we outgrew it (I think his latch just corrected when he got bigger).

  • Yeah, I've been going to a support group weekly which has been very encouraging and next week is our local LLL meeting I am also thinking about going to for a new source of support/advice.  I swear when we go to the meetings and see the LC she does everything right.  Then we get home and she does good for a day or two then all hell breaks loose.  I hope this trend stops soon and we get the hang of it.

We've tried laying back a bit, but she just hates that right now.  Football and cradle both work ok, but I notice no less pain with one than the other.  Any other hold suggestions?

  • LLL is good because once you meet a leader, you've got a new best friend you can call on any bad day. You can actually call now (all the leaders I've met are really, really happy to help and happy just to listen if you need to vent/cry) but I felt more comfortable having met them.

The only other position I can think of is side lying.

This video is interesting (but it's probably stuff you've seen by now)

  • I don't have much advice since you seem to be doing everything that you can.  But I just wanted to let you know that I went through the exact same thing and also had a low supply.  I can't tell you how many times I wanted to give up!  The pain so bad on one side that I would break out in a sweat when I switched to that side.  But I pushed through and around 6 weeks everything got better.  I remember at my 6wk pp check up the Dr walked in while I was feeding LO and commented on how it looked like we knew what we were doing with BF and I realized I hadn't had pain in a few days.  Anyway, my point is to hang in there...it will get better!
