Hello - At my anatomy scan the u/s tech informed us that my LO has a single artery in her umbilical cord, as oppose to two arteries.
The Dr that came in to explain the situation to us was not my regular Dr, I was at a different office that had the Level II u/s machine. The Dr just said that they'd monitor the growth of the baby, paying special attention to the heart and kidneys.
I go back for another anatomy u/s in a couple of weeks and have my normal OB appt this coming week.
From what I've read online (March of Dimes & What to Expect) the outcome can range from a normal healthy baby to congenital heart defects and/or kidney issues.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Can you tell me if your prenatal care changed and what the outcome was?
Thanks
Re: SUA - Single Umbilical Artery
A very close friend of mine is currently carrying a baby with a single umbilical artery. So far her baby is still 100% a-ok, but she has been told to prepare for delivering early and she has more frequent monitoring. She has about 2 months to go at this point.
Good luck to you.

Our baby girl was diagnosed with SUA on 12/5. The doctors at MFM scared the h*ll out of us with predictions of chromosome disorders. After a quad screen, a second anatomy scan, an appointment with a genetic counselor, and a fetal electrocardiogram, our little girl appears to be fine. However, having said that, they have told me I'll need extra ultrasounds to monitor the baby's progress and non-stress tests after about 32 weeks just to make sure our LO isn't stressing out in her final weeks.
It's useless for me to tell you not to worry, but our genetic counselor said SUA is pretty common and in most cases there's no reason behind it or problems that result from it.
Thank you for the feedback all and I welcome any additional feedback.
I am trying not to worry, as our 1st trimester screening (u/s & two part blood work) went well but it's hard not to worry.
I am very concerned about IUGR because our son was full term (39 wks 6 days) and weighed 5 lbs 15 oz. As far as I know he did not have SUA.
We go back to the High-risk OB on the 17th for another Level II u/s, I'll be holding my breath because the first time the u/s tech was not able to see all 4 chambers of the heart (LO was moving and flipping). The Dr there assured us not to worry and they would just keep a close eye on her.
To boot, we are moving back home in the middle of my pregnancy so I have to start going to all new Dr in my 3rd trimester.
If you want to keep in touch since we're both going through the same thing, let me know. My high risk appt is the day after yours, hoping you get only great news.
Thank you, sent you a PM.
I also have an SUA with my LO. So far so good. They basically told me more monitoring. They found a choroid cyst as well so I need to have another ultrasound with a perinatologist to check things out but I'm staying calm so far. The kidneys and heart looked good and baby is measuring a day ahead:)
I will keep u posted if I find anything more out, my appointment is Jan. 9th

Our boy has this. It was noted at his 16 week US. It apparently occurs in 1% of singleton and 5% of multiples. We were already high risk for other reasons, and go to a MFM doc. At his 20 week US they did an echo on his heart which was negative. They looked at his kidneys and don't see an abnormality either. This was also true at the 24 week US.
From what I understand, if they baby has IUGR, it's usually towards the end. Thus far, he has been growing very well and is actually larger than the girl. At 24 weeks he was 1#, 12 oz--which was the 64th percentile among 24 week babies.
Hope this helps. We just keep praying every single day that they're both healthy.
Thanks all, I'll be keeping you all in my T&Ps and wishing for healthy babies. Let's try to keep in touch and keep each other updated.
My next u/s is on the 17th so I'll post then to update everyone.
There are a few people on the High-risk pregnancy board that have commented as well. It's nice to know I am not alone.
I don't know if you'll check back but I had a SUA w/ #1. He did end up having kidney issues (only 1 functions but it is doing great) so I did a lot of research and it is absolutely rare. Your baby is far more likely to be just fine.
After a follow up u/s at my dr at 28w we went to a MFM at 30w and again at 36w. I also had weekly u/s & NST at my OB office starting at 34w. (I also had high BP)
I went into labor on my own at 39w and DS was born at only 5lb5oz (but when I was born at 42w I was only 5lb3oz so we have a history of tiny babies). They had estimated him at 5lb10oz the week before so we were cleared of IGUR. I understand why you are concerned about that, but there is nothing you can do except take care of yourself.
Even with the 1 kidney he is just fine. We see a pedi urologist yearly. He has no restrictions as far as sports, food, anything.
Try not to let this overshadow your pregnancy, i did and wish i hadn't. You're doing the best you can and it's out of your hands. Good luck!
