Back pain-any suggestions?

Hi ladies...so I'm lucky in that I've experienced a pretty "easy" pregnancy (as easy as it can get, am I right?).  However, the one symptom I've had lately that is just KILLING me is back pain.  It's a dull constant ache that radiates over my ENTIRE back, and nothing seems to make it feel better...it hurts to sit, to lie down, to stand, etc.  A long hot shower will take care of it for about...15 minutes, then it's back again.

Anyone have any suggestions or things that they do to make their back pain go away?  TIA!

  • Tylenol and a heating pad. Avoid anything that you know will aggravate it - for me, it's standing around too long, vacuuming, mopping or hunching over in my chair.

  • ICE! Sometimes heat aggravates the problem and what you need is ice.

  • Get on your hands and knees and slowly rock forward and backward, and also do some stretches where you arch your back up and down like a cat. I've had horrible back pain and started doing this a few times a day and it's helped me immensely. Also, If you spend a lot of time sitting in one place start looking at that as the cause. . .I was sitting on my couch a lot and realized that was causing some of my back pain because of how the back of the couch is positioned.
  • Like others have said, do the cat-cows aka pelvic tilts, hands and knees over a birth ball so you don't strain your arms and wrists, you can also sway your hips when leaned over the birth ball. Float in the tub. In the shower, pay attention to your shoulders as well to release the tension and possibly the pain.

Is the baby posterior? If so, ask your dr what they recommend to do to turn her, trust me, you don't want back labor. Take what you're experiencing now...then gradually amplify it. Plus, with a posterior positioned baby, you'll sometimes have contractions that tend to be ineffective or will double up on you even during early labor.

But what you're going through sounds like the start of my labor.

  • I had this problem during 36 and 37 weeks. I took hot showers a few times a day and did the cat stretches in the shower.

I also added a pillow between my knees for sleep.

It stopped for me at 38 weeks, now i just get the dull achy back with the BHC's. Baby also really dropped at 38 weeks, prob'ly why the pain stopped.

  • I'm in love with the Salonpas pain patches.  You can get a box of 40 at Walmart for about $5 or 120 at Costco for about $8-10.  I asked my OB and she said they're perfectly safe to use.  I love them so much I carry them in my purse so I always have them should back pain strike.  I've even given them to friends and family to try.

The only drawback to the patches is that they smell like pepermint so I feel like I'm walking around smelling like an old lady all the time.

  • Thank y'all SO much for the suggestions!  I will try any and all of these lol.

We're so close, ladies!  Everything may be changing when these babies get here, but at least we can sleep comfortably for those few hours we do get to sleep, right?

  • Alternate with heat and ice.

Try reclining in a recliner to take some of the pressure off.  I find that if I am sitting on the couch or in a regular chair, I have a lot more pain/discomfort....and standing just makes me tired! :)
