Breastfeeding

Weaning from Bottle

Hello, I am new to bf. My baby girl was born at the beginning of 37 weeks and had to stay in NICU for 10 days. She is currently 2 weeks old. I really did not want her to have formula, but I did not have a choice with her being in NICU. My milk supply could not keep up with their feeding schedule so they had to give her formula. Plus she had jaundice and they needed to get her off IV fluids with either formula or breast milk.  I was able to breastfeed her in the NICU, but we had little success. Now that we are home, I am trying to get her off the bottle and to the breast only. She current will latch on, but then stops sucking shortly after. After a while she gets mad because it is not coming out fast enough. Earlier today we worked on breastfeeding for 30 mins and she sucked off and on. By the end she is so mad that she is screaming and turning red.

As of right now, every 4 hours I bf, bottle feed, and then pump. I am pumping about 3 ounces each time I pump. I am freezing some of the extra for when I go back to work. I would love to cut back on pumping, without having an effect on my milk supply, which cannot happen until I have her breastfeeding. If she acts hungry I put her to the breast, but so far it has not made a different.

Any Advice?

Re: Weaning from Bottle

  • I would breastfeed her earlier than 4 hours so she isn't so hungry and won't get so aggitated. I think since she is so young every two hours during the day would be better, that way she gets tons of practice and wont be so hungy. Good luck

I will try that, thank you. The main problem with trying to breastfeed her more is that she is usually sleeping and nothing I do will wake her up. That is why we have been sticking to the 4 hours. I will see if I can figure out something to get in more time.

  • We had that problem of her sleeping so much too.  Give it a bit more time and she'll wake up a bit more too.  I also agree with pp's about trying to feed her earlier than 4 hours.  DD still eats just about every 2 hours except at night.  Is she gaining ok?

The LC just called me, after I was trying to reach her all week, and recommended the same thing. I am going to go see her tomorrow. I am not sure if she is gaining okay or not because we have not been at this long. We have only been home since Saturday. The LC is going to weigh her tomorrow, so we will see if she has lost or gain any. Thank you for the advice.

  • I know a lot of people are anti nipple shields here (with good reason), but I wouldn't have been able to breastfeed my preemie without it.  He wasn't strong enough to get milk without it.  Something to consider, anyway...

We tried the nipple shield three or four times and she hates it. I worked with two different LC and different sizes, it did not matter she would not take it. Thank you for the advice.
