Re: Would you EBF while taking two L3 category meds?
SSRI's are used in conjunction with other medications to treat Neurocardiogenic Syncope. I have a pacemaker and using Sectral to help control the AV block I have. Normally, they use other SSRI's for Neurocardiogenic syncope but because Prozac is the safest and most studied during pregnancy that is what they placed me on when I was pregnant with DD.
I have tried to take other SSRI'S but it was without success and it did not control my symptoms as well as Prozac did. Due to this and the fact that I am having a c section which will place more demands on my heart and increase symptoms of my heart condition(s) I am very hesitate to try and wean off onto another SSRI.
I did successfully nursed DD until she was 10 months old while taking Prozac with minimal issues. The main concern is the Sectral as it passes at a higher percentage into my milk. It has been shown to cause hypotension in small or preterm babies, which DD2 may be.
I did call Infant Risk and was told that my best bet would be to find alternative drugs if I wanted to EBF. It really isn't advisable at this point for me to switch medications or switch right after birth due to the increased demands on my heart. So, although I would love to nurse this baby just as I did with DD, it's looking slim.
I did talk to my OB and MFM and they said I could EP and then mix my milk with formula so she gets a dilute amount of medication but still recieves breast milk. My issues with this I will not have a ton of extra help and will have DD1, DD2, and my niece most days all by myself and will need to take my niece back and forth to preschool and taking DD1 and DD2 to appointments, etc and I know that in general, pumping takes longer than nursing.
