1st Trimester

This absolutely ENRAGES me.

I need to vent somewhere before my computer goes out the window.

So, I post on/watch a forum on another site for plus sized pregnant ladies, because I am a chunkster. No problem. But my first issue with this place is that the average IQ seems to be, maybe, 20. I promise that some of us overweight ladies HAVE been to college (or grad school, or high school, or junior high). Typos are one thing, brainfarts happen when we're pregnant, but I don't think anyone there knows how to use real words. Every "big" word (more than 6 letters or so) seems to be typed phonetically. You know, how teachers asked us to sound things out and spell them the way we think they should be spelled when we were in first grade? Yeah.

Very little common sense, and stupidity abounds. I am horrified that some of these women will be responsible for playing the part in the education of a child because when you cannot spell simple words, you have no business educating any person--I wouldn't be sending my sixth grader for tutoring with a first grader, for instance. But, rage against the completely illiterate aside....

SMOKING WHILE PREGNANT.

Someone posted something the other day, asking how bad it would be if she just had one cigarette, because she wanted one and stopped smoking 3 months ago. Wondering how much damage it could really do if she just had one. Of course, I said it would be very irresponsible to do something like that.

WELL WELL WELL. Here's someone else's take! "My dr said under 7 a day is fine. I have two a day but only smoke a lil at a time. Supposedly its not enough to damage the baby. And one defonately will not do anything to harm it."

Followed up with: "But u are right! They are completely vial. Im just not ready yet"

.....why can people like this be blessed with children, while others can only invest years and years and thousands of dollars into fertility treatments and hope it works? Nothing about this makes sense. If my doctor gave me permission to smoke up to 7 cigarettes per day while pregnant, I'd ask to see his or her license, because chances are it's just some crayon scribbles on the inside of a Dr. Seuss book somewhere.

I understand that it is quite possible that my hormones are getting the best of me, hence my absolute rage over people who can't use words. But seriously, deciding to continue smoking while pregnant because you just don't feel like stopping? I hate you.

  • Yes it is sad that these women are going to be mothers.  There is no justice in pregnancy.  Poor children.

  • Considering that I hold my breath and plug my nose around smokers on the street, and that I've had to limit my time with my smoker dad...yeah, I'd say I agree with you! My dad's smoking has really decreased the amount of sympathy I have for smokers - no many other habits affect the health of everyone in breathing distance. Especially when that person is INSIDE you...

  • I hate to be "that person", because I agree with you, however.... I've heard that the withdrawal are worse for the baby, than the smoking.

Withdrawal is a bit different... I see a huge difference between needing to taper off to avoid withdrawal, and just deciding to keep on going because you don't feel like it!

Yes! In theory I like the ability to communicate with others who may never look pregnant/who won't start showing until late pregnancy, but so many people there just add to the stereotype that fat women are uneducated and stupid and therefore their babies will be born already malnourished and ridden with birth defects.

  • Ok. I was a heavy smoker before I was pregnant with DS and the minute I found out I was pregnant, I quit. I dont believe my child suffered fro any withdrawls. I also believe in putting my children before my own selfish needs.

DS is now 9 and I was a smoker again before I got my BFP on the 27th. I have quit again. I dont understand woman who smoke thru pregnancy or breastfeeding. Having been a smoker I understand the urge to smoke, but I also have more sense to put my childs needs before my own!

    **lurking**

I agree with your entire post, except the above bolded. My father was a single parent, and he raised me alone from the time I was six months old. He didn't have any education past eighth grade... but I was a straight-A student, made a 28 on my ACT, and was offered full scholarships to colleges across the state.

That said, the smoking issue bothers me SO bad. I have a friend who has had 2 kids (at 19, no less) and she smoked HEAVILY throughout both pregnancies. She claimed that her doctor told her there was absolutely no harm in nicotine intake during pregnancy. As if any reputable doctor would say such a thing... Her baby boy was born at 34 weeks, and she wasn't in the least bit upset. I asked her how she felt about it and her response was, "Ah, he'll have to be in an incubator for a week or so, but I'm not worried about it." Seriously? Barf.

  • Both the physician and the patient are pathetic. I'll definitely be praying for the children born under the care of that particular doctor.

  • I have a cousin who smoked with all three. I understand your rage. I can't stand being around smokers at all, let alone pregnant ones. It's so sad.

When I was pregnant with my son I was working very long hours as an assistant manager and shift supervisor in an Indian casino and was told by my doctor that the second hand smoke was most likely the root of my pre-eclampsia. :(

    Smoking disgusts me.

  • I've read some women post on here that they are on "doctor regimented smoking plans." I kind of gag at the thought. I was a half a pack a day smoker... I admit. I quit, cold turkey, when I got my BFP. I'm so glad I did. I was in the process of quitting but LO pushed me to the limit. I was a total bish for the first few weeks but DH survived =P Nevertheless, I don't know why women can't stop smoking when they are pregnant knowing that it can be extremely harmful to their LO's.

My mom was a smoker throughout her entire pregnancy with me. Of course the knowledge and information that we have today wasn't available then but she was a nurse and knew better. I honestly really hold resentment towards the fact that she couldn't stop smoking for me. I was born small (-6lbs past 40 weeks) and dealt with speech impediments and learning disorders in school. Also, I have always been on the smaller petite side compared to my tall, bigger family. Of course nothing can be attributed to her smoking 100% but I think at least a small part of my struggles can be attributed to her smoking. I've overcome those struggles... thankfully.

Nevertheless, it drives me up the wall when I see/read/hear about women smoking while pregnant. If they can't quit now, for their child, they will never quit.

  • I was pregnant in Aug and m/c in Sept. I smoked and it stressed me out that I smoked and couldn't quit and I truly believe that smoking contributed to my m/c. I quit smoking and now I'm 11w2d pregnant and feeling super healthy and not stressed. I get so angry when I see women that are pregnant smoking.
  • I completely agree with you. I went to check it out and the whole site just seems....odd? off? Almost as if someone was being paid to make the site.

Anyway, off topic, if you need a laugh, check out this blog someone writes mocking the site you're talking about:

  • I used to work in an office with a lot of fertile mental midgets. Came in one day to pregnant coworker having a tirade bevcause an office down the hall was being painted, and the fumes were clearly going to harm her baby. She then stormed outside for her 3rd smoke break of the day. ::headdesk::

  • the smoking thing really gets me.

a personally story.  my cousin- same age as me accidentally got pregnant with twins.  she was 27ish at the time.  she smokes a pack a day- and my son has very serve  asthma, and I.m a non smoker- so I was saying to her- even when you do everything right you wish as a parent you could do more...anyways =- she said the doctor said no to quit as with-drawls will be worse, anyways- she drank 5 star bucks a day and a pack - a pack an a half of cigarettes YET after the babies were born and to this day- the kids can't have meat as the hormones UNLESS organic, everything is organic, organic milk etc erta and she won't immunize as she believe they will get downs.

The smoking while pregnant gets me too!  especially parents with babies in the back seat DRIVING & Smoking- don't even get me started.

    lolololo
  • The whole smoking thing makes me pretty upset, but the reason I am responding to this post has nothing to do with that. I wanted to say that I have noticed that the website you are referring to, does seem to have very different language and beliefs than this one. HOWEVER, I do think your hormones have gotten the best of you. Every person has their strengths and weakness' when it comes to things. I, for one, suck at math and science. I mean, I am actually HORRIBLE at it. There is a major block that happens with those subjects. My husband, on the other hand, is almost 30 and has a mild form of dyslexia. He can not spell his own name. He spells things phonetically and he struggles to read our 10 month old daughter books. I do not think you can say we have no business educating our children. We will just do so in the areas that we are strongest.

While I agree some of the women on that website seem very ill educated, I have to look at as I do not know their background. Some of them may have learning disabilities. Some of them may not have the educational background that some of us do. I try to overlook the small things, but on the bigger ones (such as smoking 7 cigarettes a day), I am more likely to quote something ACOG or APA says.
