How to decline Baby Shower Invites?

It wouldn't be bad if there was only one, but there are 3 baby shower invites at work! Eveyone keeps asking if I'm going, and when I say "No, I can't make it", they all want to know why not.

What am I suppose to say? Um, because I'm too selfish and emotional and I can't handle it right now. Um, because she was really rude how she told me she was KU, even though she knows my struggles. Um, because she was a fake IF'er and told me to "Just relax" and it will happen and now I can't stand to hear about her being KU. I know I sound petty, but I REALLY can't attend these showers.

Making a busy excuse for one is easy, but how do I decline 3?

    "No, I can't make it."

    "How come?"

"I have a prior committment." and then in your head add "To keep myself sane."

They are at peoples homes. But that is a great idea! It takes the focus off me missing the party and on the GREAT gift I'm getting them! I also like the non-baby gift idea.

    Thank you!

I'm so glad you posted this question!! It sucks being that age where it feels like EVERYONE is having babies around you and they all want you to put on this "I'm so happy for you!" face. And I'm so glad to read Jalara's response - perfect! Keeps you out of the "dog house" with friends/co-workers and also out of the baby aisle. Love it.

    I like this!

I always feel the need to overexplain things, too.  But sometimes short and simple is the best.

I really hate when pp try to pry. I can't make it means...I can't make it. Sorry. Rant over. Shifting the conversation is a great idea and one that I practice often.

I agree with the others - you don't need to explain yourself at all.   I've turned down lots of them - I send a gift.  And I do something nice for myself (usually shopping!) during the time the shower is taking place (so I'm not sitting at home feeling sad for myself).

What strikes me about this is that people feel entitled to know the details of your personal social calendar. It's none of their business what your prior commitment is.

Are they at work parties or at home parties?

I find that if I put a spin on it quickly it sidetracks them. I would say " Thanks for the invite. Unfortunately I can't make it but I've got a divine gift all picked out!" And then I buy a gc for a facial or pedi so I never have to go to a baby aisle.

    Hope it helps!
