Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Restaurant pet peeve

I have a few friends with babies and we do lunch often. The last two places we've gone to do not have changing tables in the bathrooms. I don't get it. I love these new local cafes, but how tough is it to instal a table or have a portable one for people to use? I have ever changed DD in the back of our station wagon but it's freezing. One of my friends changed her son on the floor of the bathroom. I can only imagine the germs. Yuck!

  • Not that it is an excuse but I just googled the cost of one and it is around 1000.00.  That might be why little cafes do not have them

  • I'll add to this. I'm annoyed by places that have a huge empty area where the sinks are but still put the changing table in the handicap stall.

We went out with my mom and went to change K. My mom said she could see it through the door gap, but someone was in there. I sat K on the sink and while waiting, another woman came in. I was venting to my mom how stupid it was to put it in the stall, when the woman came out. The other woman went in!! Neither was visibly handicapped and there were 2 other empty regular stalls.

  • Loading the player...
  • I couldn't find one in the airport the other day.  I check two different restrooms.  Nothing on the wall or in the handicapped stalls.  I even checked the "family" restroom - nothing!  I kept thinking I must be missing something.... I don't get it.

  • I hate it when there are only changing tables in the women's room and not the men's. There are a lot of places that H can't take A to by himself without risking a freezing cold in-the-car diaper change. I also hate it because I have to change the diaper when we're out a lot more often than he does...

  • I hate that! When I run into that problem I just sit on the toilet and change DS in my lap

  • I was annoyed that the family bathroom at the airport didn't have one. I didn't want DS running around in the bathroom and it was just the two of us at the airport so I decided to use the family one so I could go and then change his diaper.

The changing table in the woman's restroom in the airport had it out in the hall but there was a line of women waiting to go. I had to ask them to move out of the way and then they all got to look at my kids junk when I changed his diaper. Thank god it wasn't a stinker. I actually like for the changing table to be in a stall.

You can get a Rubbermaid Sturdy Station for $225 on amazon. One of our friends lives in a tiny house and elected to put one in their bathroom. It's not really a huge cost.

Wait, whaaat?! Explain please! I'd love to know this trick! Much better than resorting to the gas station floor. I'd rather risk diaper rash than the gas station floor!

I've changed K on my lap in the front seat of a car. Put their head on your knees, butt up against you and just be careful you don't get kicked in the face. Wink

I do the sideways trick... I put DS's head slightly over the edge of my left leg so his legs are hanging over my right hand. Make sure you have everything ready... And then I just change him as if he was laying on the changing table but I keep my left arm over his stomach to prevent him from rolling over or getting down... If we go to a friend's house that doesn't have a changing table I do it this way too instead of laying him on the floor or couch... It is super easy! :)

    Agreed!

  • I agree, I hate when there isn't a changing table. Resorting to either the countertop (which is always wet and NASTY) or the cold car suck.

I am also thoroughly annoyed when I'm shopping alone with E in the stroller and the handycap dressing room is occupied by a single person that doesn't need it, with plenty of regular size dressing rooms open. I sat outside a dressing room for 20 minutes at Old Navy the other day and finally left without trying anything on.

  • I was surprised the other day we went to Round Table Pizza and they dident have a changing area in the bathroom at all! and our mall just remodeled . they had the great idea not to have changing tables in the bathroom or the family bathroom, they have a Marble slab set up in the hall between the restrooms that has a small indentation cut into it!

  • this annoys me too.  i can understand fancy restaurants not having one, but we've been to numerous chain restaurants lately that were newly built in our area, and many of them don't have them, even though there's plenty of room for them.
