TTC after 35

I have what I fear is a dumb question

I bought some pre-seed for this cycle, because last cycle I had some dryness that made things difficult. Anyway, bought the pre-seed because it's sperm friendly. But I was thinking about the US I have before trigger and wonder about the gel they use on the wand and how long that gel can stay in there--is it sperm friendly? I suppose I should ask at my next US next week.

Re: I have what I fear is a dumb question

  • Humm I don't know what they use on the wand but I'm sure its fine considering they are in the business of getting you pg.  I'm sure its out within a day at most anyway.  FWIW I have used ky and never had a problem getting pg.

  • That is a really good question.  I just looked it up.  The most reputable website that I found said that it is sperm friendly.  If you ask at the ultrasound next week, let me know what they say.  I am very curious.

That is why I thought it might be a dumb question. It hadn't occurred to me until just now with buying the sperm friendly lube, even after 8+ months worth of US at my RE's office, because we're doing timed intercourse I guess I wondered if that might be hindering our success.

Not exactly on topic but just wanted to mention something about cervical mucus since you are doing TI. It turns out that mine is really thick and was killing all the sperm before they could get up there.  I am now taking (per my RE) 2400 mg mucinex per day (1200 in am and 1200 in pm) to thin out my mucus so sperm can get through it.  Did you ever have a post coital to check it?

Lucky you.  Most lubricants however, do make it a little more difficult for sperm to swim and cause more to be killed in the acidic environment of the vagina.  This includes KY.  Preseed is the most popular lubricant for TTCers. I'm also included a previous bump discussion on the topic: https://pregnant.thebump.com/getting-pregnant/fertility-ovulation/qa/effects-of-lubricants-on-getting-pregnant.aspx

Haven't thought of the ultrasound gel question before, but I don't think it's dumb.  Wouldn't hurt to ask.

I have not had a post coital and it hasn't been suggested. Maybe because we have gotten pregnant twice, although both ended in early miscarriages? If this month does not work out, I will ask about doing one. What days do you take the mucinex? I have some in the cabinet from a cold a few months ago, maybe I should give it a try.

Some REs believe post coital tests are a waste of time.  Like you, I've gotten pregnant before.  I have a 2 year old son and had an early miscarriage in December 2010, but my doctor still wanted me to get one.  I didn't think I had any issues with my cervical mucus, but I was wrong.  My doctor directed me to start taking Mucinex.  I start taking it five days before I think I'm going to ovulate.

  • I asked about the US gel at my appt today and she said it is a water based gel and does not harm sperm. She said they have a lot of patients doing TI so that's why they use it and she said it was not a dumb question.
