A special thank you to Sillypit who turned us on to Honokowai Beach Park in northern Kaanapali. Because there were 2 sets of reefs, it was perfect for DD to relax and play in the water and sand. She was very intimidated by the waves at the other beaches and wouldn't go near the water, but with the reef blocking the waves, she played happily for hours while the rest of the family snorkeled in between the reefs. We saw tons of fish (I counted 12 different kinds) and TONS of sea urchins.
We took DD on the snorkeling trip. The glass bottom of the boat wasn't very large and she was bored quick. Unfortunately, it was too windy to go to Molokini so we ended up at Coral Gardens. DD was okay on the view board, but because of the wind it was too cold for her to stay on it for long. She spent most of the trip trying to run around, which meant one of us running around after her. Not too fun.
Highly recommend the aquarium for at least 2 hours. We only got to spend 1 hour and didn't get to the glass tunnel where you can see the fish all around. DD LOVED it nonetheless and it was easy to watch her as she walked from fish tank to fish tank.
We stayed in Lahaina which was great because there were plenty of shops and beaches minutes away. We tried to drive to Wailea, but DD had a meltdown in the car so we had to turn back.
Those were the highlights. Hoping others find it helpful.
Re: Update on Maui trip
Hahah yes. We brought along her bathing suit AND extra clothes, just in case
