1st Trimester

Pregnant and about to move!

Here's our situation:  My husband ships off to Basic Training mid Feb.
While he is gone, the kids and I will be moving in with my parents (20 min's away) so I will have help with the kids / save money.
We had planned on this long ago- but now I am pregnant and am too afraid to do heavy lifting.
My dad can't help, as he has a shoulder injury, and I only have 1 unreliable brother. My husband can only do so much!
Have any of you been in a situation like this? what did you do?

Re: Pregnant and about to move!

  • Why can't your husband do it before he leaves?

This, this, this.  The best motivator is pizza and beer.  You'd be surprise how many people bite at a Facebook post. :)

  • He can- with friends- but I just feel so guilty not being able to help much during the move!  I can pack boxes, but typically, I've always been "one of the guys" and carrying the heavy stuff.  I'm just going to feel pretty useless.

  • We moved when I was 8mos pregnant so I totally get what you mean by feeling useless!! Fortunately, my husband and dad did SO MUCH but my in-laws lived across the country and couldn't help so we recruited some friends and hired movers for the really heavy stuff. I understand though... I couldn't move boxes or paint or stand on a ladder or anything! It was awful... but I was good at packing and delegating :)
  • My DH and I will be moving within a month or two. Depends on when we can get a house. But we will be moving 4 hours away. It isn't going to stop me from moving I won't be lifting any of the furniture, but I will be doing everything I can. I'll have to, I am not sure how many people we can get us to help us.
But Pizza and Beer is always a motivator for people.

  • When we moved there were a lot of things that were lighter lifting - boxes of clothes, lamps, boxes of towels/linens, pillows, etc - half the battle is packing, so helping do that is accomplishing a huge part of the job. And during moving day, having someone run the show, timing, ordering food (if you do this), pointing out where rooms are or where to put things is just as big of a help as actually doing the heavy lifting. So you may not be "one of the guys" but you'll be doing your part!

  • While my husband wasnt heading anywhere, I did have to move when I was 5 months pregnant w/ our first child. We made sure to pack all boxes light enough that I could life (no more than 30 lbs per MD's recommendation).. and otherwise, I would have your Hubbs move as much as he can before hand- or hire some movers to help w/ just the large too heavy stuff.

  • We are probably going have to move across the country for my husband's job.  I plan on doing a lot of packing, but we both agreed on hiring movers.

I'm not sure how it is all going to work out.  He may have to fly back and forth quite a bit for a while.  We both agreed that we don't want to have to find a new doctor in a place that we don't know anyone.  That being said, we might have everything moved except the necessities until after the baby is born.

Has anyone ever done that?  How old should a baby be before moving them across the country (probably by plane)?

  • During the first tri, as long as you are having a healthy pregnancy, it is still ok to lift/move lift/moderate weight. Just listen to your body, take a lot of breaks, and drink a lot of water. I just moved in with my boyfriend this weekend and it went great. I'm like you, and am usually one of the guys when it comes to physical labor. But my bf was able to find about 4 close friends to help us. By bf and I boxed everything together a couple days before the move, and while the guys did all of the lifting on moving day, I cleaned the old apt, made a beer run for them, and made tham all a lasagna dinner for after the move.

this! And have your H do as much as he can before he leaves. Start packing things you don't use at all now and he can move them little by little. There's always stuff that doesn't get used but still want to have with you so that can go straight to your parent's house!

Big Smile  Good luck! And don't feel useless-I know it's easier said than done but you're doing as much as you can. Plus you have kids to take care of!

  • I was told that lifting is not of concern in the first trimester.  I was really concerned because I'm an RN and lift on some pretty heavy, total assist patients fairly regulary, and my OB said as long as I'm having someone help me not to worry.  I think you should scope out some help regardless though!
