Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

transition from sleep sack to blanket

DS is 16 months and does great with the sleep sack. I will talk to his Ped at our 18mo check up but I'm curious about how you made the transition.

For now we're happy with the sack. It's a sort of trigger for him, when we put it on his thumb goes in his mouth and he starts twirling his curls. It's freakin' adorable, to be honest.  (okay, now I'm boasting) He naps and sleeps like a champ. Still taking two 1-1.5 hour naps and sleeps 11 hours a night. What about your kiddo? Is that about normal?

Thanks!

Re: transition from sleep sack to blanket

  • Same scenario over here.  I put DD in her sack and she's out for the count - same at daycare. She sleeps 11-12 per night and one 2-3 hour nap.  Eventually we'll have to transition to blanket and pillow but I have no idea how and I don't really want to mess with what's working!

  • We stopped the sleep sack because it was the summer and too hot for it in our house.  We now dress DD in a long sleeve onesie and footie pajamas along with trying to put a blanket on her.  I don't think she really prefers it but its there in case she wants it.

  • My daughter was super in love with her sleep sack. My husband, however, disliked how she would chew on the zipper and was afraid for her teeth. We decided to transition her to a blanket right before Thanksgiving. I thought she'd have a fit, but she was a champ and did wonderfully. She still sleeps really well at night and for naps.

We also just recently took away her pacifier and, although the first night was rough (she woke up at 3am and chatted for two hours), she's back to sleeping like a champ again.

I was sad to see the sleep sack go, but it wasn't nearly as terrible as I thought it was going to be.

  • We switched from the sleep sack to a blanket around 9 months. DS loves his blanket and pillow and after a week or two got much better about keeping the blanket on and even keeps his head (relatively) on the pillow. There are times he rolls out of it, but he's in long pants/sleeves and socks, so its not a big deal if he's uncovered.

  • They make big kid sleep sacks with legs, for kids who kick off blankets and move around a lot like mine.

  • I guess I never thought of it as a transition. DD slept fine all summer without one and is back in one this winter for the warmth. She moves around a lot and tends to sleep sideways in the crib with her legs out the slats, I'm not going to worry about her freezing all night! She's in the Halo XL and fits fine at 34 inches long.

I'm terrified of the transition.  My LO is ridiculously tall (99th percentile) and he's rapidly outgrowing it.

What brand do you guys use?

Have you looked at the big kid ones?  They go up to 4-5T.

  • I'm not planning on stopping the sleep sack anytime soon because she won't keep a blanket on and it gets cold in the winter (usually low 60s or sometimes upper 50s and that is inside the house). In the summer it gets really hot and she sleeps without a sleepsack without any problem. I will probably transition to a sleepsack when she is ready to keep a blanket on and actually understand that it will keep her warm so that she can cover herself up when she kicks it off. I really like the sleepsack and I still use the ones without the holes for feet (she's 19 months). She can stand up just fine without those and it is not like she is walking around the house with them. She does nap with a blanket right now because for the hour that she naps she usually doesn't move around enough to kick it off and if she does (which is rarely) it is usually not a big deal. She doesn't need it to go to sleep. Your kiddo may surprise you when you try it. But really, what is the rush?

Ditto. I think I'll move up to the big kid ones when she outgrows it. She's such a wild sleeper, it will take a while before she's ready for just a blanket!

  • My LO is 22 months and still sleeps in a Halo sleepsack for every nap and night.  We use the early walker, the one with foot holes.  Love, love, love it!  He would just kick off or roll away from blankets, so this keeps him warm all night.  And like yours, it's still a sleep trigger.  I plan to keep him in them through the winter, and maybe finally stop in summer, then try regular blankets next fall.
