We have been at home getting settled in with our baby girl. I've been meaning to post her birth story, but when I have to decide between computer time and sleep, sleep always wins Sorry if this post is rambling - I am so super tired!
Lainie arrived at 6:50pm on December 7th - 7lbs 13oz and 21in long.
At 1:30 in the morning on the 7th I woke up because the baby was moving way more than she had been, to the point that I started to worry that something might be wrong. Two hours later, I hadn't been able to sleep at all because she was moving so much... my hubby suggested that I call the after hours number for AAOBGYN to see what the on-call doctor said. After speaking to the doctor, he suggested that we go ahead and come to labor and delivery, just to make sure the baby wasn't in distress for some reason.
We got to the hospital around 4:45am and they hooked me up to the fetal monitor for an hour. Baby was doing great and according the the monitor I was having no contractions, although I was feeling A LOT of pressure... I assumed because of how she was positioned. After deciding the baby was fine and just having an active night, they sent us home. We got back to the house at 6:30am (I was actually scheduled for my weekly check-up that same day at 9:00am) and I told my DH to head back to bed so he could sleep before our appointment. I tried to sleep for 30 minutes or so, but was in so much pain that I couldn't. I decided I should go ahead and take a shower so I could start getting ready to go to the doctor. I sat on the floor of the shower for 45 minutes, crying! I was still pretty convinced I was not in labor, but just hurting due to Lainie's position... I finally got myself off the floor, got dressed and woke DH up. He suggested that I start timing my pains just incase I was in labor. Sure enough, I was having contractions every two minutes! We loaded up the car and headed straight for the hospital.
When we got to Dr. S's office, they checked me and I was 100% effaced and 3cm dilated. They sent me back to labor and delivery where I got set up in my room. I was running fever when they checked my vital signs and was just not feeling well at all. I had intentions of going med free, but by that point I was having steady, very strong contractions every 30 seconds to minute. My blood pressure was running low (which is crazy since I had been on bed rest for HBP!) so they had a terrible time starting my IV. I had to get stuck like 6 times by 3 different people before they finally got it started. I talked with the nurses about pain management options and decided that an epidural would be a good idea. The anesthesiologist came about an hour later - he started the epidural and 45 minutes later I was still feeling every contraction.... so he had to start the epidural again. As terrified as I had been about the whole thing, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The second epidural worked quite well for about 5 hours... then it stopped working on my entire right side. I had no pain on my left side, but was feeling full contractions on my right. They upped my dosage of epidural medication, but it didn't help at all. We decided not to start the epidural again and I just went through the rest of labor and delivery with a half functioning epidural. Not fun.
By about 4:30pm Dr. S came to check on my and I was 10cm/100% - time to start pushing! My temperature kept spiking and by the time I was pushing, it was running 101.5. I pushed for an hour and 45 minutes when the baby's heart rate started going up quite high - Dr. S decided he needed to get her out, so he cut an episiotomy and delivered her with forceps.
When they took her temperature after delivery, she was at 103. They took her from me and started talking about sending her to the NICU. I was sick and absolutely terrified for my baby - it was the worst feeling ever. While I was getting stitches, they took her to the nursery to get checked out. By the time I got settled in the post-partum room, the nurse came back and let me know that she was going to get to stay with us after all. Dr. S said that as long as her temperature was back down and her blood work came back fine that she didn't need to go to the NICU.
We ended up staying in the hospital 3 days so that they could keep an eye on her to make sure everything was ok.
We got home on Saturday, December 10th - we are completely in love with her and enjoying our time together.
If you made it this far, I am impressed!
I am not sure how to PIP so I don't know if this will work or not...
