When does our food affect our milk?

I'm trying to figure out why my DD is so gassy.  She's EB.  How long from when I eat something does it get to her? She's 11 weeks old and has been gassy from the beginning but some days seem worse than others.

TIA

  • Mostly within a few hours, but actual allergens take a couple weeks to clear the body.

Honestly, babies are gassy. I don't think it's an actual issue unless you're really heavily into cabbage and brussel sprouts.

  • Another culprit that I was highly into when LO was young was CHOCOLATE!  Dare I say it, the pedi informed me that eating too much can cause tummy problems for little one...never thought about it but really Chocolate = caffine..yikes!

My IBLCE told me that it's a myth that mom eating gas-causing foods causes gas in the baby via the breastmilk. It's likely dairy in the mom's diet and a lactose-intolerant baby.

Well my LC told me that not that many babies are actually lactose intolerant and cutting out dairy is way too commonly advised and cruel to mom.

Oh I can attest to this!!  Whenever I ate chocolate in the first few months, E was NOT a happy camper!!

  • It's all so confusing and I the responses confirm that. :) So, a few hours after?  That's when I should take into consideration what food I ate?
  • I actually asked my pedi this question just yesterday. She told me 4-6 hours after you eat something is when it hits BM and can be there up until 12 hours after you have eaten. Not sure how true the 12 hour thing is but the 4-6 hours sounds about right to me.

  • Also note - a big help with my gassy girl (who is still quite the burper and farter after 8 months) was the gas relief drops.  We used these the first 3 months and they truely do help.
