What is the difference between lenses that are 18-55mm vs one that is just 50mm? Couldnt the use that is 18-55mm do the same and more than just a 55mm? Sorry if that is a really dumb question, I know nothing about cameras.
50 mm is a prime or single-focal length lens. You could use the 18-55 mm to do the same thing.... But I've found that my 50 mm prime lens takes way better pictures than my 18-55 mm zoom lens. Since the prime doesn't have to deal with moving parts, the glass inside the lens is more precise than the zoom. I also prefer them because they are lighter. Very rarely do I use my 18-55 mm anymore, I mostly stick with my 50 mm prime.

Good explanation, thanks. I am going to use it for taking pics (action and portrait) of LO and dogs at the shelter for petfinder and probably gardens and flowers. Is a 50mm the way to go for that?
I have a canon t2i which is 18mp. I'm not familiar with the camera you are asking about, but google tells me its probably either 8 or 10 mp which is much lower than cameras being sold today. Are you buying used for a great deal or something? Do you know if you can use the old lenses with a newer camera, if you ever decided to upgrade your camera body? That was a reason I bought a Canon.

I'm buying used and was just looking on eBay. I think I will stick with cannon or nikon since it would probably be easier to get accessories.
Mine is 13 mp...I think. Sad that I can't remember.... It's a Nikon D5000. When you are getting into mp, I'd say that anything over 10 mp is good for portraits and action photos. The mp come into play when you want to blow a picture up to poster size or zoom in and crop a picture. I've never had any grainy issues with my photos and I've printed out photos up to 8x10 size.. I don't know anything about Olympus, aside from it is a good brand, but I think Nikon and Canon are just more popular because they have a wider variety out there.
