Success after IF

What ever happened to being discreet?

Seriously-we just had the most awkward play date/dinner date ever.  We had another couple over last night.  We've hung out with them a few times, never had them over for dinner though.  I made dinner-whole roasted lemon chicken, red potatoes, green beans and biscuits.  Simple enough, right?  First, they arrived to our house 45 minutes late.  Whatever, dinner was still timed fine so I wasn't worried.  When we sat down for dinner, the wife honest to God looked at the food as if I had presented to them and old boot and a license plate on the platters.  She literally dissected each item as she picked her food.  She took a bite and immediately asked for salt-I brought her some.  She proceeded to shake salt crystals in the palm of her hand and then placed them on the side of her plate.  As she ate EACH SINGLE BITE OF FOOD, SHE DIPPED IT IN THE MOUND OF SALT! Literally-a 1 inch high pile of salt.

I was so hurt, and it made me very uncomfortable.  She then made sure to offer her husband some salt-then when he denied, she gave him a look like, "are you kidding me, how are you eating that?!"  We thought it was good-chicken was moist and flavorful-but I guess she did not agree.  It was the weirdest thing I have ever seen. I could not wait for them to leave.  Embarrassed

  • She dipped every piece of food into the salt?  That's overkill.  She has a problem.  And very likely is giving herself the gift of high blood pressure, if she doesn't have it already.

Ditto, I LOVE salt and when I have baked/roasted chicken I tend to douse it in salt, not as a comment on how well it was made, just because I like it much saltier than a normal person would cook it. Never occurred to me it could offend someone, I hope I haven't hurt MIL's feelings when she sees me pour salt all over her chicken!

However, notwithstanding my view on the salting alone being no big deal, her behavior otherwise as far as the looks she gave the food, urging her husband to salt it, etc., indicate that maybe there was more to it than just liking salt...either way she sounds like a weirdo!

  • I'm not a big salt-eater, but I think the putting a mound-o-salt on your plate and dipping each bite in it is over-kill.  Dump some salt on it and let it go.  If your DH wants salt, he'll freaking ask for it.

    She's a turd.

  • I agree that some people are salt crazy.  I dont put salt on anything or use it in my cooking but DH, my mom and his mom all love salt so they add it to everything.  I try not to take offense but I know that their taste buds are ruined and adding salt is the only way there is taste for them.

I was going to say something similar to Davez though, I bet she has some kind of eating disorder or is extremely picky.  It's definitely rude!

  • People are strange.

You could return the favor by attending a dinner date at their house and then after tasting a bite, push the plate away and ask your kid & spouse if they like the yucky food...
    Too mean?

  • Thanks girls -I'm glad I'm not a crazy biotch for taking offense. I'm all about salt and wouldn't have cared a lick if she salted her food. It was the expressions she made while looking at and tasting the food, and then the mound of dipping salt she made had made sent me over the edge. And we did use salt while cooking on everything but the green beans! Good theory, but I'm not sure about the distorted eating habits-we've gone out to eat numerous times and she's never done that. I know restaurant food has much more salt than we typically use, but still. Be kind, sprinkle a little salt on your meal and keep a straight face while chewing! LOL.

  • She's a kook.  My niece has a weird salt thing too - salts EVERYTHING generously even if it's already salty - it freaks me out.  BUT -- I think if that was me I'd say to the host "don't mind me, I have a weird salt thing, I even put salt on pizza!  This is delicious!"

And the offering her husband the salt too and then giving him a weird look - oy.  She does sound like she has a weird food thing.  I'd never have them over for dinner again, that's for sure.

And like the other posters - I want my invite!  Your dinner sounds AWESOME to me!

    Wheee!

  • There is a way to act when eating at your own house and a way to act when you're eating at someone else's house.  She obviously doesn't know the difference.  Very sad for a grown woman to lack manners.

Another salt lover here and while I do try and be discreet sometimes food is under salted for my palate, I love salt.  Nevertheless, being 45 minutes late would piss me off big time.

  • I yell at DH all the time for salting his food before even tasting it first- he's just a big salt user. With that said, this lady sounds like a total ingrate. 45 minutes late and then acting the way she did... I would certainly not be inviting her back! Seriously, what is wrong with people?
