3rd Trimester

Is 6.5lbs small for baby born at 41 weeks?

I friend had her little girl yesterday and she was only 6.5lbs, and 41 weeks pregnant.

I was just shocked b/c that seems so tiny for a baby of 41 weeks gestation, but really - I have no clue. Just wondered?

  • It's not unheard of, but seems a little on the small side to me.
  • I think its a little small but still a healthy weight.
  • i was born at 41 weeks at 6 lbs 4 oz, 18 inches long. completely healthy! my family just has little babies!

  • FWIW, I was born at 42 weeks and I was 6lb, 2 oz.  There was nothing wrong with me.
  • Oh I don't think anything is wrong w/ her at all .... I guess I just assumed that the further along you are - the bigger your baby will be ....

But that is silly of me. :)

  • My little girl was born on October 12th, at 40w4days and was 6lbs 8oz, and 19.5 inches long... she's as healthy as can be and at a month was already 8lbs 4oz! Doctor said since I'm not that big she wouldn't have expected a big baby...
  • It's smaller than average - I believe average is in the seven pound range - but it's still a healthy weight.

  • Statistically it's smaller than average, but babies come in all shapes and sizes just like people do. You don't find it strange that a lot of adults are shorter than average, do you? It's really the same thing.
  • It probably seems small because all we ever hear about are the big ones. But it's still a healthy size! Congrats to your friend on her little peanut!

  • I was 6.5 pounds...
  • No, that's perfect actually. My dr. was telling me that it used to be that all normal babies were born between 6-8 lbs and anything over that was considered big. Now, with all the processed foods we consume and extra calories, sugar, etc. babies are being born larger (which he thought was really not a good thing).
