Pity party. Advice on suddenly refusing one side? (XP)

XP at 3-6 Month and Breastfeeding boards.

Pity party. My 15-week-old EBF LO won't nurse on my left. She'll do a quick suck-suck-suck, then turn away, then another suck-suck-suck, then turn away. She gets very mad and whiney. She'll arch her back and wriggle and arch some more and do anything to pull away. I'll get to the point where I give up and turn her around and the problem is solved... no problem at all on the right side. Dr. Google said it could be an ear infection that might cause her pain to be in a certain position or lying on a certain side. It's been so long since I've had an ear infection myself that I honestly don't know if there's visible symptoms. Would an ear infection look different than normal inside the ear canal? Increased ear wax? What am I looking for?

If it's not an ear infection, Dr. Google also suggested a breast infection. I have no issue. No mastitis or plugged duct. Nothing I'm aware of, anyway.

What else do you think it could be? We're still pooping fine and still getting enough to eat, so it's not a HUGE issue, but still.

LO's been a strong nurser with no issue on either side until a few days ago. Letdown and latch and flow have never been an issue before, so I really don't know what in the world is going on. When she wakes up in a little bit I'm going to try the left side again. What do you guys think? Has anyone had any similar issue? At what point would you consult the pedi?

  • Most ear infections won't have visible symptoms... Sometimes there is yellow drainage but I don't think it's common. So it could be that.

Also, you said there has never been letdown issues before but could it be now your LO is getting older maybe becoming more impatient on that side if it is slower? My lo is definitely becoming a "different nurser" as she gets older, but I'm not an expert by any means

No advice or wisdom here, but this would be the easiest thing to check if you have a pump.  I let down faster on one side than the other, but that same side gives less output overall...I only discovered this by pumping.  I hope your LO goes back to that side soon!

I also noticed this as well and DD didn't seem to care ............ Until recently.  For three days she refused to eat on the left side FIRST.  If I offered her the right side and then the left she was okay.  I just couldn't start on the left.  This has since passed for some reason.

  • My LO is also less patient about waiting for the letdown.  He'll do the same thing - suck, suck, suck, and then pop off.  I just keep trying and hoping for the letdown and eventually it works out.

  • I just had another idea -

I was just feeding DS and when I switched sides I had him cradled in my arm laying on the boppy (so like I was about to put him on) and I talked to him a little before putting him on side two.  During that coo session, I felt myself let down and he latched on much easier.  Might be something to try?

  • I know this is late but I posted on this exact same issue here last week. I have huge boobs and I've made sure to hold some skin away from my LO's nose when she's nursing on the left; she's had a cold recently and may have been having issues with breathing on that side. She's feeding on the left again for the most part although it's not her favorite side.
