Classes!!

How many of you are planing on taking classes during your pregnancy? Ex. childbirth, breastfeeding, CPR??  If you are going to take classes, which ones?  If you have taken classes, which ones and would you recommend taking them?  I am still trying to decide what I want to take!

Re: Classes!!

  • They offered a basic newborn care class at the hospital I took while I was there when I had DD.  It was good enough, I don't think I really needed anything else before.

  • I have signed up for Prepared childbirth classes. My hospital offers breastfeeding, epidural, and newborn classes. I have three nieces and grew up in a home daycare, so I am opting out of newborn classes. I asked around an noone I knew recommended the epidural class. So I am still considering breastfeeding.

  • Im taking a general prenatal class offered through the hospital where I will be giving birth. I would recommend talking to your doctor about the options available to you and what she/he suggests

  • This time around I won't be taking anything but with my first I did the basic childbirth class through the hospital.  I didn't really learn too much, but my DH got a lot out of it so it is worth going.  I knew I was going to breastfeed and did a TON of research so I didn't really need the class..but I would recommend it to people who are on the fence about it or still have the "well im going to "try" " mentality! The class (from what I have heard) really gives you the "YOU WILL SUCCEED" attitude.

  • I'm taking a childbirth class and a breastfeeding class. My husband is taking a dads class that is included in the price and at the same time as my breastfeeding class. We are also both taking CPR, but that is for our teachers licenses. It just happens to be during pregnancy too.

  • I'm going to take a breastfeeding class and a childbirth class. They're both offered at the hospital I'm going to deliver at. Also, the woman that teaches them will be there when I deliver as the lactation consultant. So check out your hospital, see what they offer.

  • We took the classes offered at the hospital that included birth, newborn care and Infant choking/CPR. It was a good overview of everything, and our instructor was EXCELLENT.

  • Good question! I've been wondering the same thing too! They're kinda pricey, so I want to make sure it's worth it. I definitely want to do the CPR one and am considering child birth and infant care. One of my best friends is a lactation consultant, so I'm going to ask her if there's anything major I'll get out of the breast feeding class that she can't explain to me over the phone or on skype (she loves across the country). Curious to hear from others though.

  • This is our first so we will be taking a Childbirth Education class, it's a 3 week series. My doc recommends taking it around 28-32 weeks so I just signed up for it tonight actually!

I plan take a Baby Basics & Beyonds class, basically a pediatrician comes in and talks to you and gives pointers etc. I've been around babies a lot in my life but my husband has not so I think it will be helpful to him.

I also plan to take a BFing class. I really want to BF so I want to be informed.

These are all offered at the hospital I will be delivering at.

  • Hospital offers a free childbirth class that you pre-register for when you're in your 7th month. We'll be doing that one.

  • I wanted to take Bradley since I'll be having a BC birth with no pain meds, but classes for that are outrageously expensive! Instead, I'm going to read books and watch some DVDs. As far as I've seen on the natural birth board, women have had just as much success reading and watching DVDs as they have with classes (for Bradley). I'm definitely going to La Leche meetings, though, and probably will take a newborn care/CPR class that they offer at the nearby hospital. I might take a water birth course too!
