If your LO has had a stomach bug

Isabel was up between 1:30 and 5:30 puking about every hour until it was just stomach acid.

After 7am she was ok, she's kept water and BM down in small amounts and has nibbled on one cereal bar.

She just ate 1/2 a banana and is active and seeming ok.

What do I feed her now? Try to keep it bland? BRAT diet? yay or nay?

She doesn't have a fever.

Re: If your LO has had a stomach bug

  • Tread lightly. I would stick to bland food. And don't be surprised if she wakes up throwing up in the middle of the night again tonight or tomorrow after a couple days of feeling better. That's how it went down in our house.

  • We stick to the BRAT diet for 24 hours

  • We started with a little Gatorade and then water.  We cut out milk and dairy products completely for 2-3 days and only fed them very small amounts of BRAT diet foods.

We slowly introduced milk and dairy back in and they were back on their regular diet about a week after their first puke-splosions.

  • Keep it bland and light.  Oatmeal, crackers, etc. but do not push.  My DS ate NOTHING for two days when he had a bug, and I was all like "but he's gotta eat!" and offering him stuff all day, which he totally did not want.  Offer water often or even pedialyte, but don't even worry about the food.

  • I was worried about her not eating but I think I won't push it b/c now I am not feeling good so I bet I know how she feels!

    Ugh!

It was scary because she puked in her sleep and the only way I knew is she was sleeping next to me (teething=sleeping in my bed) and it freaked me out!

Yeah, follow her lead momma.  The worst is over fairly quickly, all said. One of the times DS has had puking stomach bugs, he never woke us up!

Anyway, we've done this a few times now. I withhold everything until an hour of the last puking episode, then I try a little Pedialyte or water. I don't give any food until at least four hours after the last time he's vomited, and even then I only offer food if DS tells me he wants to eat. Then it's baby stuff: rice cereal or oatmeal. Banana.  Eventually maybe some dry toast for the entire first 24 hours after he's able to eat something. No milk for at least 24 hours (don't know about BM), I wait even longer to reintroduce it if he has diarrhea too.

Good luck - thinking well thoughts for you!

This was us except we did Pedialyte instead of Gatorade, and it was poop-splosions, not puke. Very very gross.

  • Keep it bland. Being hydrated is more important than the solid foods. We used Pedialyte for a bit to get her electrolytes up.

  • Both our kids have had stomach bugs this week and we were at the pedi this morning for our 12 month check-up, so this is what the pedi said:

While your kid has vomitting or has nausea:  feed only clear foods and liquids- juice, pedialyte, jello, broth (or something like chicken noodle soup is okay), etc.

While your kid has diarrhea:  Avoid foods that are high in sugar, so it's almost the opposite.  No juice, no fruit, and no milk, unless it's lactaid.   Anything with sugar or lactose will make the diarrhea last longer than it normally would.

This sounded like different advice than the brat diet.
