Confession

My family keeps bugging me to get face time / tango whatever it is for the iphone to do video chat. Like, "have you done it yet, have you done it yet, have you done it yet..." texts and emails to download stuff. This is the LAST thing on my mind right now. I need to dig out the network key/password to our wireless router, I think - anyway...and frankly - I don't even WANT to do this at all. So I keep blowing them off.

Come visit if you want to see my kids.

Does anyone use this stuff?

Re: Confession

  • I just got my iPhone 2 weeks ago for my b-day and I've Facetimed (??) with my Uncle in CA twice.  It's great for talking to him and easier than setting up my web cam to Skype.  He's the only one in my family that I use it with though.  One other Aunt has an iPhone but we're not very close.

  • We Skype with my In-laws weekly. We bought them a webcam 2 years ago and they still say it was the best gift. Traveling isn't an easy option for them but having Greyson recognize them, call them Grandma and Grandpa, being able to watch him play is priceless and quiet frankly worth the effort. DH does most of the talking, I might wrangle in the background but they are content just watching him do his thing.

I would say that your family is looking for way to connect and it isn't such a bad thing. Sometimes I think we are resistant to technology just for the sake or resistance.

What can it hurt if you get it? You may find that you love it or they may never use it. If you find that they want to use it all the time you can add it to your routine like Sunday after dinner time but before bath. Then you know when it will happen and can plan for it.

  • Yes, I've used it.  We use FaceTime with my dad, and with my mom and MIL from their iPads.  We were looking forward to using it when DH went hunting for several days, but it wouldn't work since he wasn't on wifi.
  • I Skype frequently with my parents (they are in Florida and travel is just not an option right now). We actually enjoyed opening Christmas gifts together which was wonderful. I think its an amazing tool to stay in touch with loved ones who are far away.

  • We have it too and I hate it.  I hate to be in pictures so this is no different to me. However, it's great for our boys to talk to our family with it so in that respect it's good.

  • My MIL asked to Skype with C and she lives 20 miles away, and my answer was no. I use it with my grandmother in FL, but not often.
