Breastfeeding

exclusively pumping

Hi all- with my first, I breastfed almost exclusively. This time around, my daughter was in the NICU for 2 weeks and I found it really uncomfortable to BF there so I started pumping. We are home now, and I am still doing that. I have very little interest in trying to get her off the bottle- i remember it hurting like hell, and not going well with my first. and she is so used to the bottle now that I know it would be a struggle.

question- how do you manage if you are pumping and feeding? DH has been helping but will be going back to work soon.

Was it successful? I know you can get less from pumping that BF. I am still way ahead of her in terms of milk but that won't last forever, and she is starting to eat way more than the beginning.

Re: exclusively pumping

  • Congrats on your LO!  And, good for you for undertaking EPing to make sure your LO gets BM.  I am EPing because my preemie just couldn't get the hang of nursing and it was causing us more stress than anything.

During the night I actually pump while I am bottle feeding DS (thank goodness for hands-free pumping!).  During the day (still on maternity leave) I usually pump right before or right after I bottle feed.  I lay DS on the boppy or his bouncy chair right next to me and it works ou well for us.

I haven't been able to completely keep up with DS needs, so I have been supplementing with a little formula (around 2/3 BM, 1/3 formula).  I know my lack of nursing has caused my supply issues, but for our family and our situation, EPing just works better than EBFing.  If you stick with the EPing and have to supplement, just know you are still doing a wonderful thing for LO!

  • Thanks! that sounds great. I need to invest in something hands free. Suggestions??
  • I use the Simple Wishes bra.  I got it at Destination Maternity, but I am sure they have it at most maternity stores.  If you get one, make sure you look at the sizing.  I am a 38DDD and I wear a S/M.  They are adjustable so they can be made very small or very big.

Good luck.  If you have any other questons, let me know!

I cut two small slits in an old sports bra and it works wonders.  Plus it was free.

I don't ep, I am trying to nurse her but it's not going fantastic so I do have to pump too.  I can't have her anywhere near me when I pump though because she goes nutso while I'm doing it.  Like the second the pump turns on it's like she turns into a bloodhound that can sniff out breast milk and she gets suuuuper mad.  It makes it really hard to pump when home alone and she isn't sleeping.

  • I will try the sports bra first and if no luck, off to get the other one. Interesting about the size. I am a 38DD now and was going to get XL!

Ive extended my ML just bc of it.. So no I dont really have any advice aside form good for you & keep up the hard work, your LO appreciates it.
