Book Rec - The Birth Partner

I've done a ton of reading about gestation, childbirth, parenting, etc these past nine months, but few of the books I have read have been as concise and well organized as the one I checked out of the library for my husband:  The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin.

It has been on his nightstand for weeks. Last night I finally picked it up and started flipping through it.  There was stuff in there that I'd never read before (like why women tend to stall late in labor - because the the uterus takes a few minutes to contract down after the head emerges to be able to push out the rest of the baby - which makes perfect sense when you think about it but I'd never read it anywhere else) and really basic stuff like signs of impending labor laid out in easy to understand charts and tables for your partner to refer to.

Anyway, if you are looking for something for your partner to read in the run up to birth, I'd recommend this book.

Re: Book Rec - The Birth Partner

  • That's awesome. I might have to check and see if the library has it (for me to read).

I bought DH a book (Be Prepared: A Practical Handbook for New Dads) and he still hasn't finished it. In fact the only reason he started it is because I read it out loud on a trip home from WV. I loved it, but apparently he will play it by ear ;)

  • It was our pregnancy bible. My wife learned so much from that book that actually mattered during labor.

BGG, I loved your birth story.  Now, I'd love to hear it from A's point of view :)  Any advice that she might have for our partners would be much appreciated.

We spend most of our weekends about an hour from where we live.  I used that joint commuting time all spring and summer to read out loud to DH from parenting books and other stuff about this beautiful (ahem) process that I was finding interesting.  But he has actually made it a whole 81 pages into the Birth Partner on his own (I think at this point he is being driven by the "Oh sht this is actually going to happen" reflex).
