Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can we talk about baby poop?

In regards to the post below, I have started table foods maybe a week ago and there are small chunks in DS's diaper mainly of carrots  (sorry TMI). I thought this was normal but my mom changed his diaper and implied that maybe it meant he wasn't ready for that solid of food or he wasn't chewing it enough. He really is refusing purees so I don't know what to do. Is he ready? Is this poop normal or like some adjustment period?

  • Totally normal! Babies systems aren't mature, like ours, so they can't break down the food as well.

  • I don't know what your mom is talking about. If you look at your poo after eating just carrots, you'll find the same thing...(Gross I know)

All poo will have bits of food in it. If he is eating it well & doesn't want pureed foods, then he's fine. Just make sure that the pieces are small & you'll be fine.

This. I can always tell what she ate the previous day by a look at those poo diapers. I've seen carrot, mango, peas, green beans, etc. almost whole in there.

  • Ok this all makes me feel better. I thought it was normal. My sister didn't really do any food, table foods or purees, just breastfeeding, until they were 1 so I think my mom doesn't remember that most babies start solid foods sooner than that.

Sheesh at least cut it up for her! Wink Yep, totally normal.  I have seen all sorts of textures and colors in DS poop, I only worry when his behavior and temperament change.
