Austin Babies

Recommend your Pediatrician

Moving to Austin area (actually Bastrop).  Need a good pediatrician that:

1) you get to see 80% of the time for sick appointments.  Im not a huge fan of going some place that is going to put me with one of the other 10 doctors in the practice last minute.

2) Is willing to give out meds for a sick child instead of sending us home to let it "run its course".  This may sound crazy like I prefer my kids constantly be on meds.  Not the case....I just want to know if my child is up coughing all night, the Dr has no prob giving us a cough medicine.

3) Since I live in Bastrop, I really dont want to have to drive to Bee Cave if at all necessary.  Not a huge issue if I do but it would be nice to drive 30 min or less to see the Dr.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Recommend your Pediatrician

  • Well, here's the thing. Any pediatrician that's trusted and good is going to be super busy. That means they will not have huge availability where you can just see them at the drop of a hat. It's like if you call someone to work on your AC. You should be concerned if they say "Sure! I can come over right now!". If either of my children is sick enough to need an appt in the next 6-12 hours, I trust that any doctor in the practice is going to be able to diagnose and treat them appropriately. Otherwise, it can probably wait the 2-3 days it will take to get them in to see "our" doctor.

As for your second need, I don't know where you're going to find that either. Babies shouldn't be on cough medicine. If they're coughing it usually means they have crap in their lungs that needs to come up. Even if it's inconvenient for you and tiring for them to be up all night. The best cough medicine for kids over the age of 1 is available in your kitchen cabinet. 1 tsp of honey. It's non-narcotic and doesn't overdo it as far as supressing cough. It relieves the irritation in the throat without subduing the reflex to expell mucous from the lungs.

If you find a doctor who will give a baby or toddler codeine or phenergan cough syrup - I don't know that I'd think highly of them as a doctor. But I suppose there is probably a few out there who will.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but these are my honest opinions as a mom.
