M i ren a ladies....Have you had this? Maybe TMI

I've had my Mirena for almost 1.5 years (May 2010). I was BFing at the time and didn't start my period again until March 2011. Up until last month, I had had a "period" every month, although my cycles were getting shorter and shorter with each month. Last month, I never had one. Now, the last 4 days (starting Christmas Day), I've had bleeding, starting with some clots in the toilet and then red/pink on the TP, and for the last 2 days I've been cramping really bad. All my previous IUD "periods" lasted maybe 1-2 days and no cramping was involved.

Has anyone else had this experience? Do you think it's just a lengthy period of some sort since I didn't have one last month or do you think something could be wrong with the IUD?

  • I don't have one so this information/advice is clinically based.

First, can you still feel the strings of your IUD? If not, then clots with cramping is cause for concern. You should be evaluated by your OB ASAP.

If you can still feel your strings, take a pregnancy test. If it's positive - again, immediate call to the OB. It could be an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage but either one needs to be managed carefully.

If you can feel your strings, and the pregnancy test is negative. It just is what it is. Whenever you skip a cycle, the next one is usually a good deal heavier and more painful as a result too. 800mg of Advil (ibuprofen) will help with uterine cramping.

  • Well, the problem with that is we made the mistake of cutting them too short really early on after insertion because DH could feel them. My OB already told me that it would be hard to remove and that I should have it done at the end of the day because I probably wouldn't feel like doing anything the rest of that day. So, long story short, I can't feel the strings, nor have I ever been able to.

  • I have had Mirena for 1.5 yr now and I never know what to expect from month to month.  In the beginning, I spotted for like 2 months straight.  Then nothing for months (but I could always 'feel' my period with slight cramping, bloated, etc).  Then a random 2-3 day light period the next month.  Then nothing for months.  So unnerving (seeing as I got pregnant on an IUD for #3) and always cause for me to take a test anyway.  I just had a light period this month with it.  So, really, I am no help other than to tell you that I'm all over the board with Mirena.  I just keep my drawer of pregnancy tests from Dollar Tree stocked.. haha!
