Upstate NY Babies

5-7ish month olds..

I know there are a bunch of babies born with in a month or so of Natalie.. What are they all doing these days?

So I'm starting to have my first little panic about Natalie's development. For the most part I think she's on track.. but a few things are worrisome.
She is sitting OK, although wobblier than eve was at this age, despite having started sitting earlier. She is doing fine with reaching things and manipulating things with her hands.

However, if I put her on her tummy, she only lifts her head for a minute.. and does not push up on her arms or attempt to get on all 4s. I was just watching a video of Eve before she turned 6 months and was on all 4s.. not moving anywhere.. but pushed up really well.. Eve was scooting backwards by 7 months.

Also.. she loves to eat.. but something about the way she eats seems off to me.. I dont' know if its just the normal tongue thrust reflex still there or whatever.. but she is constantly pushing food out of her mouth with her tongue and when I try to put a spoon in her mouth, she often pushes her tongue up against the top of her mouth so the spoon goes underneath. She has been on purees for 2 weeks now. It hasn't really improved much.. but she does manage to eat plenty.

She also has no consonant babbling yet.. but neither did Eve, and she talks OK.

This is what dd did too - with the bottle, with breastfeeding, with early solids.  She was still doing it at like 10 months when we saw the speech therapist/oral development lady from EI.  One tip they told me to try was bring the spoon exaggerated from up above and then into her mouth.  Kinda like the airplane game thing but make sure you come from above.  I don't know how much that helped....I kinda feel like once she started on finger foods she got better with it.  She still will stick her tongue above the lip of open cups though to drink, so weird.

Eve still does this sometimes too.. It drives me bonkers. She is better than she was.. Around the time she turned 2, she could not drink out of an open cup at all because she stuck her tongue inside it.

  • Riley turned 5 months just a couple days ago.  She isn't sitting unassisted yet.  She will raise her head and chest off the floor during tummy time, but doesn't get up on all fours, and most of the time needs me to help her position her arms right so she can stay propped up, but even then it doesn't last long.  We're making some progress on the purees...she does push a lot out, though.
  • I wouldn't worry about the eating thing.. My first DD was eating at 6 months, loved food, variety, eating Indian food before she turned 2.  My 2nd baby really wasn't willing to eat solids until after a year.. I just don't think you can compare, some kids are ready and others aren't.  DD1, no matter how hard we tried, was awful learning her colors, I even thought she might be color blind, and at 2 years+2 months, DD2 knows most, if not all of her colors.

I am not good with the physical development stages, I always have to look up that stuff.  Kids just develop so differently, but you could look up the range for when they should be doing certain things?

  • Having twins has been a very interesting developmental experiment, haha. Nat could sit unassisted at 6 months. B couldn't until 8 1/2 months, I was so worried but PT assured me that the normal range is 6-9 more sitting unassisted.

None of those things seems like red flags to me, especially if she's only been on purees for 2 weeks. I'm sure she's ok.

  • A is still wobbly when sitting.  He is crawling, but he also has slept on his stomach since 5 weeks old, so I think that is why this skill has developed pretty early.  He JUST started having interest in eating.  We had been trying for about a month or so, and just in the past week, he has been eating well (trying just about eveything, managing it well, not spitting it out, no tongue thrust).

Doesn't sound like from what you wrote that you have anything to worry about.  Remember, all babies are different and reach milestones at different times, within a wide range.

  • Evan and Natalie seem pretty on par with each other and they are less than a week apart.  He sits but topples over after a few minutes, he hates tummy time and fusses after a few minutes or just rolls to avoid it, we started purees the other day and when we got to green beans he pushed it all out (hates them?).  All of it seems pretty normal to me.

  • Owen just turned 7 months yesterday.

He has been siting unassisted since Thanksgiving (6months), although within the last two weeks he has finally gotten adept at it, and isnt wobbling/falling over as much.

He has always like tummy time, and has been sleeping on his belly since 4 months old. He can now get up on all 4's, and has started rocking (within the last week or two), and scooting backward... Im thinking crawling is coming very soon.

The babbling has finally progressed beyond vowel sounds... there are some B-L combos, and ma-ma's (but not Mama to me), but do da-da's yet

I think Natalie is doing just fine! No need to worry!
