So we already have a tub filled with newborn-3mo clothes, socks, hats, bibs (7), blankets, and towels (3). People have been *amazingly* generous with hand-me-downs and gifts already.
I'm wondering how much more we'll need of onesies and clothes. I kind of figure socks, blankets, hats, and bibs are "take all we get" -- they aren't really sized, for the most part, and are things that get dirty and lost easily.
But what about clothes? Should I take any newborn-3mo clothes off the registry, or will I need even more?
Re: Newborn/first few months advice needed re: prep
My experience was that we needed way more NB clothes than we had, and far fewer short-sleeved onesies but that's because I have fall babies. We have had a TON of second-hand clothing given to us, and we seriously had over 60 short-sleeved onesies size NB-3m. My girls are 14 weeks today and have finally outgrown all of their NB clothes and are firmly in 0-3. IMO you *can* have too many blankets. I think we have 10 or so and we just don't need that many. We have 3 towels....I don't bathe daily so they are always clean when the time comes for their next bath.
Also in my experience, people don't buy clothing based off of a registry, they get what they like. I wouldn't worry about adding more or taking any off.
We don't use bibs on the girls, they aren't spitty enough to mess with it.
IMO people will give you onesies until your closets are bursting. Buy some NB (or even preemie clothes if that's a worry) and the rest will come as far too many (but well-meaning) gifts or hand me downs.
I had winter babies so we never used plain onesies, except for a few random warm days. Mine hung out in footed sleepers for the first 3 months. We probably had about 5-7 boy sleepers and about 5-7 girl sleepers that we used. Plus I had a few regular outfits for the rare occasions we left the house. You never know what size they will be and how long they will wear NB sizes. DS was out of NB by about a month and DD was in NB comfortably until 8+ weeks old. Don't lock yourself in to any one style. I thought for sure gowns would be great for us but my DD hated them because her feet got caught. Footed sleepers with zippers ended up being my favorite. I hated the ones with snaps.
I wouldn't add clothes to the registry because people buy what they think is cute. You'll probably get a lot of 0-3 outfits and end up exchanging them for larger sizes to have more outfits to last you through that first year.
The babies were so different than Emerson. We needed the NB stuff a lot longer. Still, Hudson and Landry are just now growing out of the 12 month stuff but, the 18 month is HUGE. They were 4.2 and 5.9 lbs at birth and just now approaching about 22 lbs-they are 17 months next week.
I would do lots of sleep and plays for the first couple of months...only if you're working and taking them to day care would I bother with the cute stuff.
I hope you're doing well! So glad to see you getting so excited. : )
Aww thanks, Ougrad!! It's starting to get more real -- I can't believe there are only about 14wks (if I'm lucky and they stay in!!) until they're here!!
I put plain white onesies on the registry mostly so people would see size, but BRU put some weird code thing on some of them so it was a pointless act, anyway -- I'll probably take clothes off. We won't really be doing "cute" stuff (like matching shirts and pants and stuff), I meant just basic clothes -- onesies, s&ps, etc. It just seems kind of pointless for the day-to-day when they're going to be spitting up, crapping, and peeing on the clothes, haha.
Thanks, guys!! My SIL's twins were only in NB for the first month or so, so I wasn't sure if it was worth buying/getting more. Exchanging for larger sizes is a good idea, too!!
The one thing we got none of was newborn things for them to sleep in, like the fleece one piece pajamas that zipper up of button up. My parents got us a bunch for Christmas when I mentioned that we would need to buy some. We also didn't get a lot of long sleeve onesies. It seemed like people went for the cute stuff, which was generally short sleeved onesies with funny sayings or cute girls outfits, but nothing practical for sleeping or cold weather.
The only reason I'd consider putting stuff on your registry or leaving it on is if you think you'll use your completion coupon to buy that stuff at the end. BRU does not let you add anything to your registry once they send you the coupon (or so I was told last week), so anything you even think you might want just put on there if you're registered there. Once we got our nursery set up we changed our mind about quite a few things that we had registered for and returned about $300 worth of stuff, which allowed us to use the completion discount and other coupons to buy all of the boring stuff on our registry that we need but that no one bought for us.
I think it really depends on a lot of things--your babies' birth weights, how fast they grow, how much you take them out, your preferences re things like gowns with elasticized bottoms versus sleepers, etc. For us, with our January full-term babies, even at 6.10 and 6.7 lbs at birth the NB clothes were HUGE on them; preemie actually fit better the first few weeks. Then they were in NB until about 2m, then 0-3 for about a month and after that they were really consistent with the size marked for their age until they were closer to 2. (Now at almost 3 they're in 3T tops and 2T bottoms.)
I would start with kind of the basics and then after a month or two you can see both how fast they grow and what types of outfits you end up preferring and buy more then.
