Ok let me start by saying that I absolutely know that once you write a check to someone you need to make sure you have that money in your account. I've preached this to people in my own friend/family circle for years, telling them it shouldn't matter if the person takes several weeks to cash it and you need to make sure you leave the money in your account.
I have no idea how I managed to miss this but apparently our old daycare provider never cashed a check from us while we were using her services. Totally my fault for losing track of it and I'm really very good at balancing my checkbook so I truly don't know how it escaped me. But the check just cleared and it's from MARCH!
Like I said, my fault but geeze, am I wrong to think a heads up from her would have been a nice gesture? She's not obligated but if that were me I would have reached out to the person just to make sure they weren't taken totally by surprise.

This.
When I was a teller we wouldn't take checks that old. Maybe check with the bank that deposited it?

Wow - 9 months? I'm surprised her bank accepted it. Our bank allows 6 months, after that any checks are stale dated and they won't pay on them (unless it is a government or payroll check - then 1 year). I would contact your bank and at least see what the policy is. If it is 90 or 180 days you might be able to argue your case.
I'm really surprised that your DCP didn't contact you about the check. If I go more than a couple weeks without cashing someone's personal check I always give a quick call just to give them a heads up. Just a courtesy thing.
I'm not going to argue against cashing it because I most definitely wrote the check and owed her the money. She's sweet and we loved her and only stopped using her because we moved so I'm not out to screw her out of the money. It was just a shock to my bank account (and the week after Christmas and the week my mortgage is due no less!) so I wish she had let me know. Next week would have been a LOT better for me :-/
