School-Aged Children

Moms of 7(ish) year olds

My 7yo DD (1st grade) has become extremely self-centered/obnoxious in the last few months.  EVERYTHING is about her and what she wants at that moment.   She bosses her sister around, sasses us & gives us attitude like crazy.  She's always been my high maintenance kid, but this is ridiculous.  The fighting between my girls (youngest is 4) has reached an all time high and now involves hitting, kicking, scratching.  Mostly it is instigated by the older one's attitude, trying to boss her sister, and then the little one gets so frustrated she lashes out physically.  Today my older one had a friend over & she was bossing her around!  I'm thinking this kid isn't going to have any friends at the rate she's going!

Wondering if moms of this age & older have any insight/suggestions?  I'm at my wits end.  She is just not even listening anymore.  We've always been pretty consistent with discipline, but this is a whole different arena for me with the types of issues that are cropping up.  TIA!

  •  Have no insight or help because my girls are only 5 but what you just described was exactly how I was when I was 7.  Well minus the bossy.  I was horrible and I knew it but didn't know how to stop.  It was like that til I was around 8.5 then I grew out of it.

Lord help me because I can see parts of my personality as a child in each of my dds.   One is Dramatic and cries over anything and one throws a fit if things aren't just as she wants and gets what she wants.  I hope it's a short phase!!

  • I'm right there with you! My daughter just turned 7 a couple weeks ago and acts like she's an overly emotional, dramatic pre-teen already. It's driving me insane.
  • We have full protective custody of my 7 year old SD, DH has since she was born and I have been with her since she was 14 months old.

She turned 7 on the 8th.....Oh my gah...It is like a different child.  She is rude and snappy and backtalks and bossy, and has completely regressed in cleaning up after herself...

I have no idea, I have no advice but I understand.  We are pretty strict with dicipline and never ever had problems like this....I was hoping it was the new baby comming in 4 weeks but I am not so sure......And if that is it, well it isn't going to be fixed anytime soon the baby is comming either way..but she is so excited about him.  I really really don't get it....

  • You all are scaring me!  My 4 y/o already has a touch of this going on, I cannot imagine what she will be like at 7!

  • Well at least I'm not alone ladies lol!  I talked to a couple of coworkers who have girls in this age range & they also said things were very similar with their kids.  I was thinking of making an appt w/DD's school counselor to see if he can offer any insight/suggestions on how to handle.  I'm thinking this must be some sort of 'normal' developmental phase, but dang, it's killing me!
  • My 7.5 year old makes EVERYTHING about her...her latest drama move was today when picking out MY Christmas gift and how she should get to be the one who picks it out. WTH? Ugh. It's a good thing she's cute. ;)
  • I have a 6.5 year old boy and his atttitude has been horrible this past year too.  It;s got to be the age.  I hope they all get out of this stage fast!!

My son is going to be 8 in March and I've noticed a drastic attitude change. He's very rude and has a crappy attitude. He also doesn't seem to listen worth a s***. He's gotten a little bit better over the last week or 2, but I'm sick of the rude comments he feels he needs to make. GRRRR
