How do you store your ornaments?

We have some traditional ball ornaments that we just keep in their original boxes and put into Rubbermaid tubs for storage.  But all of the random ornaments we have just get put into a gift bag and separated by tissue paper.  I need a better system.  We're going to stop by the Christmas Tree Shop after work tonight to see if they have anything.  What do you use to store your ornaments?

Re: How do you store your ornaments?

  • My family (whom the majority of the ornaments are from) are Hallmark kind of people, so I would say about 95% of our ornaments still have a box. The rest are currently wrapped in tissue paper or paper towels and everything is stored in one big cardboard box. But I think they have totes that have like little grid seperators in there so they don't smash around.

This is what I have.  We got it from christmas tree shop a few years back pretty cheap.  They have nicer heavier duty ones at walmart, target, home depot also.

  • We keep them all in boxes that have layers with dividers.

That being said, I only put metal, plastic, or wood ornaments on the tree, because the kids go to town touching every single thing on the tree, taking them off, etc.  Those, I tend to err, just throw in one big box in a tangled mess... I just don't have the time.

  • in totes

glass ball ornaments- mostly in the box they came in

hallmark ornaments- in their original boxes

misc ornaments- wrapped in tussue paper, some in small boxes they were bought in (i.e. old world or small bonton boxes)

  • I have a very elaborate storage technique - all ornaments get wrapped in tissue paper or newspaper and piled into a bin.  :)  We just keep only ornaments in it, it's labeled ornaments so DH knows to be careful with it, and we reuse the paper every year.  Probably could find a better alternative, but it works for us.
  • Most of mine are in their original boxes and then in a tote. I do like the ones with dividers, Lyle is too cheap to buy one!

  • I have an ornament tote that I got after Christmas at Target one year.  I usually put a couple of ornaments in each one and bend the cardboard back if I need more room.  I can't imagine dealing with wrapping and the boxes, I'm definitely not patient enough for that.  I looked for another box at Target on Tuesday but didn't see any, but maybe give Christmas Tree Shop a try.

  • We just use a rubbermaid container and wrap them in bubble wrap. I looked into the fancy shmancy ornament containers, but all of ours are personalized or oddly shaped ones and the holders just didn't look like they would work for ours. The rubbermaid container seems to be working wonderously.
