Help choosing OB GYN/Hospital between DC and Harford County

Hi all - I'm new here and my husband and I are planning to start trying TTC early next year. We just moved to the area and I work in Washington DC and live in Harford County. I've read a lot of the posts on here about doctors and hospitals but would appreciate any input on if I should find a doctor close to work or home, and any pointers on finding a doctor in Baltimore versus Harford County. Thanks!!!

  • I would vote for someone closer to home as chances are you won't be at work when you go into labor.  Plus, I would hate to have to deal w/DC area traffic if I was in Har Co and went into labor.

I agree with this statement. Definitely look into some hospital in the Baltimore even Harford County areas. Here's a list of just a few in that area:

    Upper Chesapeake

    Franklin Square

    St. Joe's (more toward Towson)

    GBMC (Towson area)

    Harbor Hospital

Have you found a doctor you like yet?

  • I agree with choosing a doctor closer to home. I was working in Virginia when I had my boys and I delivered at St. Joe's in Towson. I would not have wanted to go too far for my appointments, especially when you go weekly the last month. I ended up having c-sections for both so I had a follow-up 2 weeks PP, and then again at 6 weeks PP, and would not have enjoyed going too far for these appointments either.

  • No suggestions really for doctors since I see the OB/GYN practice at Washington Hospital Center where I work in DC, but I do that commute as well (so do a few other girls on here and TN).  Who knows, maybe we commute together!

  • I live in northern Harford and work in Baltimore.  I've been going to Dr London at Women's Care OB/GYN in Bel Air for years and love her.  She delivers at Franklin Square Hospital.

  • I love my Dr's at Upper Cheasapeake womens care and despite my in-laws advice not to deliver at upper chesapeake I trusted my Dr's implicitly and delivered there. Wonderful experience and I know many many people who say the same thing. I can't speak for any other hospitals but for me I would go here again, just no NICU. Can't say enough good things about my Dr's though Morey/Swanbeck/Levy/Sopher.

I would pick closer to home rather than DC although you could go half way between the two and look into Anne Arundel? I know someone who delivered two babies there and also had great experiences.

    Good luck!

  • I live in Harford Co, but I am delivering at Anne Arundel Medical Center. There are quite a few practices that have their offices at the center. It's such a wonderful hospital and the birthing suites are state of the art. Upper Chesapeake is much closer, but I really didn't like the way my husband was treated there when he had an emergency appendectomy - and I don't like the fact that they don't have a NICU. Franklin Square was another option, but I found out that they have the highest infant mortality rate in Maryland.

I've been to an OB practice (Chesapeake Women's Care) at AAMC and a Midwife (I'm currently going to Bay Area Midwifery) and I highly recommend both. If you already work in DC, going to your appointments in Annapolis shouldn't be such a big deal.

Look around and see what you like the most.

    Best of luck!
