That a lot of people (and i used to be one of them so i'm not judging) think it's effing weird to labor or deliver in water, but think nothing of sticking a gigantic needle filled with various drugs into your spine that will render you numb from the waist down during labor.
Just a random thought...that I mentioned to my OB. She was like.."oh, I don't think it's weird" (but I know she does..at least a little).
Re: Isn't it odd....
Very odd. People tell me, "Whoah, you're craaazy!" in the same breath they say, "I don't know what drugs are in the epidural, but I want it."
I'm going to say that I think it's "odd" in that I doubt many women delivered babies in water 1000 years ago. So it's not completely part of what humans would "naturally" do whilst in labour.
I think there's something about being naked in water that makes lots of people feel vulnerable and so it seems counter-intuitive to immerse yourself in water at a time of high stress like labour can be.
Having said all of that, I loved being in the water with my first labour and can't wait to do it again. I didn't end up birthing in the water for various reasons, and although I'm relaxed about whether or not I birth in the water this time, part of me is still suspicious of how the baby doesn't drown. (even though yes I under5stand the baby doesn't drown)
