Need some advise for a friend..

A friend of ours is basically a single parent. His wife has had 3 brain tumors and a stroke and now lives at an assisted living. The other night he was having a bad day with missing his wife and raising their 3 kids alone. They have 2 boys and 1 girl. His most recent problem is the daughter is coming of age to get her period. And he doesn't have a clue how to approach this with her. I asked him if they had any younger women in the family who might be able to help and he said no. The other problem is she doesn't want to go see her mom. The boys are always ready to go and will cancel plans with friends to go. Then, if he does convince her/makes her go she won't leave the car.. Any help or advice would be wonderful! Hope everyone had safe and happy holidays!

    I am sorry your friend and his family are in this situation.

    Are the kids/family in any counseling? It could really help the daughter come to terms with having her mother gone/in assisted living home.

    American Girl puts out a nice couple of books about girl's health and hygiene.  This one might be useful:

    First thing that came to mind is a guidance counselor or nurse at her school. They are always willing and able to help and explain to girls changes in their body. Also her doctor should be able to explain to her what her body is going through as well. 

    Depending on her relationship with her father, it might be awkward and uncomfortable for both of them to talk about this especially if she is in her preteens. I know I would!!  It's so much more comforting hearing it from another female no matter what age she may be.

    But like the post before me said, any questions I had after my mom explained everything I learned from that American girl book!! haha it's true!
