Barbie- too cheesy?

A very, very dear friend who was like a second mother to me passed away this September. Her name was Barbara. Would using Barbara, with the nn Barbie, be silly?

Re: Barbie- too cheesy?

  • It's not my favorite and I really hate Barbara but if you're OK with saddling your girl with that, at least it's a legit name. Barbara is just so ugly sounding to me.

  • I don't mind Barbara, but I really, really dislike the nickname Barbie (the doll is NOT going away!).

ETA - I think it would make a better middle name than first name.

  • I think nicknaming your child Barbie would be a really, really bad idea. I totally get wanting to use the name though - what about Babs?

  • I don't like Barbara, but if you did choose it to honor your friend, how about just calling her Barb? Barbie makes me think of the doll. And a bimbo (at the risk of sounding rude.)

  • I think it is sweet that you want to use her name.. but I very much dislike Barbie as a NN!
  • I agree with the PPs... I like Barb as a nn better than Barbie and I think Barbara makes a better middle name than a first name. We are using my grandmother's name as a middle name because I really wanted to honor her but didn't think her name made a great first name.
  • I don't like either but I think Barbie is kind of terrible. Is there any variation of Barbara? Bobbie or Bebe maybe?

I think your best bet is to use Barbara as a middle name.

  • I have a cousin named Barbara that went by Barbie for a long time.  As she grew older, she changed it to Barb.  I think it was a hard nn for her to break around family.  I'm pretty sure my mom still calls her Barbie out of habit.  Said cousin is in her mid 30's now.

  • I'm not a huge fan of the nn Barbie (or Babs, for that matter), but I really like Barbara. Every Barbara I've ever known has been a really strong, awesome woman and I also like the imagery of St. Barbara (although the Church disowned her during Vatican II, sadly).

  • I have two aunts named Barbara. One goes by Barbi, the other goes by Barb. I think it is a classic, underused name that is still professional sounding.

  • I went to high school with twins named Catherine and Barbara, Cathy and Barbie for short.  Barbie was a total athlete and tomboy, but it totally fit her.  I think it's fine.  I'm not a huge fan of the name, but if it's special to you, go for it.

  • I'm sorry but if you name your daughter Barbie, it just seems like she's going to have psychological issues associated with the doll the minute she finds even a single flaw in herself. Plus, just imagine the things the other girls will say to her at school or daycare:

"Why don't you look like the doll?" Ect....

  • I think that is really sweet.  There is nothing wrong with calling her Barbie for short.  You could also spell it Barbee to differentiate a bit.

  • I have a friend named Barbara that we all call "Babbs". I also know a Barbie to, and she doesn't mind it at all .

  • Barbara has really grown on me this past year. It is pretty and underused.

I'm not a big fan of Barbie or Barb but of the two I think I like Barbie better.  Barb seems too blunt for me.  Barbie could evolve into Barbara once she is in high school etc.
