  I hear its only ever helpful if you are already progressing well and ready to go and just looking to encourage things along.  I guess if you are full term and progressing the incentive would be to get it moving...I'm 70% effaced and 2 centimeters with regular BH and while I wouldn't jump to it the day I hit 37w I could see getting tired of the discomfort of having her on my cervix with regular BH day in and day out and possibly consider doing it by 38w if this continues...my understanding si though that if you are not already on your way it won't change much

  Some doctors will do it to see if it will help things move along if you are already progressing, but from everything I've read, it won't unless you are already making good progress on your own. It's not something I'll try until after my due date though. 

  After TTC with IR PCOS:
  April 2011: Metformin 1500mg + Clomid 100mg + Ovidrel + Prometrium = BFP!

  My doctor started offering at 37 weeks, I was 1 cm dilated then.  I declined and declined again at my appointment yesterday, even though I'm at 2 cm now.  It will do one of three things, kickstart labor if your body is ready (usually within 24 hours), break your water or do nothing.  With my first I had it done twice.  The first time (40w3d) it did nothing and the second time (40w6d) I started active labor in about 6 hours.

  I had PIH with my first 2 pgs. They stripped both times to see if I would go on my own so they wouldn't have to induce me. It didn't work so I was induced both times. So far, no BP issues this time so I don't plan on agreeing to anything like that until at least 39 weeks. I was 3 cm both times they tried before but they just didn't do it for me.

  I'm planning to talk to my doc about it tomorrow and see if she'll do it at my appointment next week if LO isn't here by then.  That will be 2 days before my EDD but I teach and school starts back up 2 days after my EDD.  I would prefer not to have to go back for a day or two and then be off - I think that would be really hard for my students since they're so young (kindergarten).  I don't want to be induced, which my doc brought up, so this is a way to see if I can get things going without drugs.  I do know I'm already dilated some (nearly 2cm 2 weeks ago) and I've been having a ton of BH.

  I don't know what my OB's/hospital policy is on it but I've had REALLY AWFUL carpal tunnel since about 35 weeks and it is only getting worse.  Nothing at all is helping, and I can't have anti-inflammatory meds until after delivery.  Not sure if this is enough of a reason for most but it is for my OB to say she will strip my membranes next week at 38w5d.  She says normally she won't even do it until 39 weeks.
