Most public place you've BF?

In light of the recent Target story and nurse-in, I was just curious what public place(s) you've BF in/at?  And have you ever encountered comments or rude looks by people?

I have BF at a restaurant, the zoo, Blackhawks game, police department (getting a report - haha - nothing serious) and plenty of parking lots.  Probably the most public place was Germanfest (in fact, I walked into the mass there BF my baby where there were thousands of people seated in the amphitheatre).  I used to always use a cover but now DS keeps pulling it away so there's no point.

I feel fortunate because I've never encountered any rude comments or looks from others and I'm happy for that because I would have some choice words for someone.

Re: Most public place you've BF?

  • My biggest hang up is BFing in restaurants.  I'm not really sure why.  So it was a big deal to me personally that I BF in a Chevys at a table near the front.  She was hungry and the restroom didn't have a couch area or anything, so I just bit the bullet.  It wasn't as bad as I built it up in my mind to be (other restaurant goers giving horrified looks, etc).

  • I BF everywhere.  I never had any problems here in NY, but when I went down to FL for BIL's funeral I was told at the funeral home to go into the back room.  It was mortifying.  The guy said it so loud in front of the whole family.  I just said, "I'm ok right here."  Hard to believe people could be so insensitive, especially considering the situation.  My husband wanted to say something, but I told him it wasn't the time or place.

  • plane, restaurants, library, street, and yes, even Target :)

I'm trying to think of someplace I haven't BF her.... grocery store? Then again, DH does all the grocery shopping.

  • Airports, about 5 of them.  One time in a restaurant, in a booth in a section that was not being used far in the back (no way, I would use the bathroom, it was small and dirty), on a bench in an open shopping mall, several malls, and at the beach--mind you I was the most clothed person on that beach! I always look for a quite spot kinda off to the side and use a cover.

  • Probably the strangest were a car dealership while negotiating buying a car, or at a post-season Texas Rangers games where you sit so close your elbows are touching your neighbor.

But I've BF all over the place! I almost tried to do it with her in the Ergo while walking around the grocery store the other day, but I lost my nerve. I need to practice doing that one once at home and then try it in public!

  • oh and as far as comments, I've never gotten anything negative. I have had several older women approach me and tell me "good for you!" or that they are proud of me for breastfeeding. I've even fed a DH's softball games where it's mostly 20 something men, and have never had anyone so much as give me a side eye.

  • This summer I walked a lot.  DS needed to be fed so I sat down a bench next to the trail.  Got some looks, but for the most part people just kept walking/running rollerblading.  Other than that: Target and my car in a busy parking lot

  • Granted (and sadly) I'm not BF'ing anymore... but when I still was? She's been BF'ed just about everywhere... The mall (food court and numerous stores), DH's work (in front of a lot of other soldiers and their families at a Company meeting), Sam's Club, numerous restaurants, the car, the park, the fair.... and I did it in multiple states! (6, to be exact!) Never once has anyone hassled me. I'd love to have seen them try!

  • Restaurants, play area at the mall, church dinner, parking lots, children's museum, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting.  I've never gotten a negative comment either and god help the person who does say something negative to me.

  • A huge coliseum at the renaissance festival where they were having the jousting horse fights. There were probably thousands of people there.... it was during the show in the daylight.
  • I do you not nurse in public unless I have to and there is no place else to easily go. I do cover up. I also had a hang up about restaurants as well
  • Everywhere, including on rides at Disney world.  I BF in restaurants, stores, outside.  Wherever I am when my child needs to eat.  I used to use a cover but my DD rips them off now, so whatever.

I've never experienced any negative comments or anything like that. I can't imagine what I'd do if that happened!

same here.  DH still seems uneasy that I am so readily to do it anywhere, I"m not sure why.  and yes, I dare someone say something to me about nursing in public, ha.

  • wow I feel like a terrible BFer  Sad I tend to schedule my outings around feedings so I don't have to do it in public.   I'll do them in a nursing room or in my car in the parking lot but never really anywhere else outside of home or family/friends homes (and at friends if there are too many people I'll go in another room--but that's more due to the fact that A gets too distracted).

I used to always have a bottle pumped on hand anyway so it was never an issue...but now I can't really pump out as much so maybe I'll be nursing in public more.  I guess part of me doesn't want to deal with a rude/negative comment.  Unlike many of you I'm a pushover and would probably just blush and say nothing. Embarrassed

  • Airports, airplanes, hotel lobby, church, many restaurants and cafes, a clothing store, public parks... pretty much you name it, I've done it.  We have a law in MA protecting women's right to breastfeed at any place that solicits the general public for business and where we otherwise have a right to be present, so I don't feel bad about it... and I have the statute number memorized in case anyone ever tries to say anything!  But I haven't had any rude comments yet, knock on wood.

  • I will BF anywhere.

Funny story: A few months ago we were in church, and DD got hungry, so I fed DD. But right in the middle of DD's feeding, the communion service started. I didn't want to interrupt DD's lunch or have her interrupt church by screaming, so I told my DH to go ahead and that I would skip communion this 1 time. Well, the pastor saw me and brought communion to me, while I was feeding DD- and we were sitting in the very back row! The whole church turned to watch me partake in communion with DD latched on! I didn't care, and apprently my pastor didn't either!

  • Target, lol.

Mall, restaurants, in my car in numerous parking lots. The most beautiful place though was at a Hueco Tanks state park when we too our family photo. It was an amazing feeling being free and having my baby feed freely.

I use the Ergo to feed a lot, makes it so much easier and I don't have to sit to feed him.

Ok, break it down for me - how do you do this?  I have never attempted feeding while DS is in a carrier but we have the Ergo and I woudl love to know!  Isn't the head up way too high?  Or do you just let the straps out until he's lower?

I too use my ergo to nurse everywhere..

You simply loosen the straps, so the baby is mouth level with your nipple and then begin nursing! Super easy, super convenient. Yesterday in the mall I was walking and nursing and a man was very creepily looking at me. I was having an off day, so I told him to get fvcked. But other than that, i've never had any issues.

Yep, just loosen the straps. I also will use the head cover if I feel I need more privacy or drape a loose blanket over. Practice at home first. Once you do it in the Ergo you will love it.

  • Most public would be mall and at a restaurant I have not had any bad comments but when I went to lunch with a friend we came in with Harrison being a little fussy (he was hungry) we sat down and I fed him right away with a cover and he ate for about 10/15 minutes the server did not come over until I had everything all put away. I understand privacy and not wanting to interupt but seriously a girl needs a drink lol, The server who was a girl continued to act a little uncomfortable. I should of said something but I didn't but thats the only issue I have had so far. Had a couple looks from some guys a couple tables away I think cos I had the odd flash while we were getting settled but they didn't seem to mind seeing a bit of boob ;)

  • Any where that I need to. Target, Chili's, Friendly's, but the most fun was at the craft show. I picked a booth with a wall, sat down, got him situated with a light blanket covering him and then proceeded to browse. I had one vender say, "I've seen a lot of babies carried that way today." I told her, "well he is nursing or else he won't lay this way." Her reply, "Oh I didn't even think about that! and I breastfed my daughter." The daughter looked a tad embarrassed.

  • I have fed LO just about everywhere we go as he still wants to nurse every 1 1/2hours.  I nurse where ever I am when he is hungry but I do always use a cover if I am in public.  I have caught a few "side eyes" and one very angry shopper at Target but it doesn't bother me at all.

airport, airplane, zoo, sea world (quite publicly during the shamu show), target, restaurants (including right by the window), park benches, during weddings, during a memorial service, at the grocery store, sitting in my front lawn, during a street fair...  the list goes on.

  • I NIP often. I've nursed in the mall, RennFaire, Local Fair, parks (including our dog park), restaurant, hospital, family reunions. Recently I have the 'I don't care' kind of attitude by it. If you don't like it or you are offended then look away. I use to care what other thought and would go to the car to feed Desmond or I would try to find a hiding place. I remember going to sit on a toilet at the mall because I was nervous about feeding him in public. I am now comfortable about NIP and that I don't really care what others think. In my area 'chruchyness' or BFing for that fact is very uncommon. Since I BF myself I found that most of the people in my area FF. I just recently started noticing getting side eyes because of how big he is... I guess a lot of people think that I should have stopped by now. He is 6 months old and I am planning on feeding for until he wants to stop (1 year is my goal). The only issue that I ran into, and I wouldn't consider this an issue is when we went camping during labor day weekend. We go with a lot of family friends and I told my mom that I was going to just feed D when he gets hungry even if people where around (like around the campfire). She said that I may offend or make some of the other friend uncomfortable and asked if I could do it in the tent. I ended up doing it in the tent and it sucked because I couldn't be actively engaged in the conversations that everyone else was having.
