32 month old twins need potty training help!

I have twin boys that are 32 months old (3 in April).  I am due with #3 in Aug. 2012.  I have been taking them to the potty a few times a day but not doing anything on a regular basis.  I have the next 6 days off from work and would love to jump start this process.  I would like them to be potty trainned well before the baby comes.  I don't know where to start.  Any advice?

Thanks!

Maggie

  • Do you think they're ready, or are you just wanting them potty trained now because it's convenient?  Trust me when I say, it can/should be easy peasy IF they are ready.  Do they tell you when they need to pee or poop, or at least when they're going/have just gone?  Does it seem like they hold their pee for at least an hour or two and then go all at once, or are they still peeing small amounts at a time throughout the day?  Can they pull their own underwear/pants/bottoms down (because with twins there will be times when they need to go at the same time, and you can only help one at that moment)?  Have they shown any real interest in the potty at all?

If you think they're ready, then jump right in.  Get them their own special toilet ring or plastic potty if you haven't already.  Buy them some super cool underwear with their favorite characters on them.  Get excited about it, but let them take the lead.  If they're handling it well then go for it.  Stay home as much as possible while you're off.  Put them in underwear (NOT pull-ups, aka expensive diapers) and let them figure it out.  Remind them to tell you when they feel like they need to go.  Maybe even put a plastic potty in the room(s) they seem to be in most often during the day, for a while.  Expect to clean up some accidents the first few days, maybe even a lot of them.  We used stickers for rewards, and let them put their stickers on a "chart" so they could see them (one for pee, two for poop).

  • Emerson was 3 before I had her potty trained.  Everyone told me to wait until after the babies were born.  There wasn't a secret to Emerson she just had to be ready and it was pretty cut and dry.  I used a small potty in our family room but, honestly I would just use the regular potty with a seat on it.  That will cut out that extra step in transitioning them from the baby to the regular potty.

GL...it's huge when you accomplish it!

  • You could do the 3 day potty training bootcamp to see how ready they are.  I did that at our house just to get some successes.  We stayed home, they were in undies the entire day, and they drank a lot of juice and water.  After that we did a lot of sitting on the potty, or 'practicing' in our undies in the evenings until they were confident enough to wear undies all day.  I never did pull ups, just didn't see the point.

I'll say this though, with two, it's rarely easy peasy even when they're ready.  The week I had one in undies and one in diapers?  Easy.  But once they were both in undies every time someone mentioned they had to go to the bathroom, the other did too.  Outings were rough for a few months because we were making trips to the bathroom every 10 minutes.  I think we've pee'd in every neighbor's house within a one mile radius!
