Babies: 0 - 3 Months

eye contact

My baby was born at 37 weeks 6 days. She is now almost 6 weeks old and I am worried she barely makes eye contact with us. I think she can see, but I am concerned becauseus. I've read they are supposed to be doing it and even following us. I am hoping she will do all of it by 2 months (smiling too)...anyone have any inputs? I don't want to be so paranoid.

Re: eye contact

  • I think if LO wasn't smiling and making fairly regular eye contact I would be a little concerned. You might want to call your pedi.

  •  I actually asked my pedi about this at my sons 2 month appt. My 11 week old doesnt tend to stare at you and will even go as far as darting his eyes in a different direction however he can stare at you IF he wants to. They say that boys tend to be that way more than girls.

Due to her being a premie it may take her longer to Focus but I would definately  run it past your Pedi.

  • well,I'll wait and see what happens by her 2 month app...she does open her eyes wide when stimulated...and it is like she doesn't WANT to make eye contact, just like your son, she will look in different directions. She smiles when she is falling asleep, but I guess that's a 2 month milestone...so we still have a couple of weeks.
  • My LO has always been pretty good about making eye contact (he LOVES staring at you while you are talking to him!) but I was concerned because he was (what I thought) late with smiling.

He was a preemie born at 36 weeks and didn't start really smiling until last week when he was 10 weeks old.  Once he started, he hasn't stopped!  Just keep in mind that babies born early may be a little later than babies born at 40 weeks.
