Late Term and Child Loss

first postpartum check up today...

Everything went great! Doc said I didn't tear so they never stitched me up (Ava only weighed 5lb3oz at 40w1d). He said all tests were normal. The one thing he did say was that looking back he see's where he could have noticed a problem.  When he measured my belly each week, I wasn't growing everytime.  This would cause concern but we were so low risk with her moving and she had a great hb that he didn't worry about it. He said that now knowing her birth weight of 5lbs and my belly not growing, he strongly thinks there was something wrong with my placenta, makes sense. (possibly from my early subchorionic hematoma)

At first, I was a little ticked thinking "if something was wrong, why did you ignore it, you killed my baby". But then I realized if she weighed only 5lbs full term, inducing early meant she probably would have weighed even less!  Her chances for survival weren't that good anyway.

I was thinking on my drive back which would be worse? Her being stillborn or having her and watching her die? In ways, I wish I could have heard her cry or saw her move or look at me just one time but I'm glad I didn't have to see our angel suffer.  She came out looking so peaceful and that's the memory I'm holding on to!

Re: first postpartum check up today...

  • I'm glad you had a good appointment. My cord failed 2 weeks prior to Aidan being born and I was like why didn't you notice at my last appointment. I was always measuring right on track until the appointment when they noticed it hadn't grown after seeing on the u/s that there was little blood flow. The last appointment didn't have that problem.

"I was thinking on my drive back which would be worse? Her being stillborn or having her and watching her die?" I'm on the other side of that and I've thought the opposite as you. If we had waited there was a chance he would have been stillborn because they had to perform CPR when he was born. So I've often wondered how I would have been.
