2nd Trimester

Fear I'm leaking amniotic fluid....

the past few days it seems like my panties are constantly moist. I don't remember peeing on myself, and usually when I sweat they are damp around the leg elastic. I'm just a bit worried that I'm leaking amniotic fluid. Do any of you girls experience damp panties or have leaked fluid.....just a bit concerned. Dr. office is closed but I will be calling tomorrow for sure. Just wondered what you girls experience was. Thanks.

Re: Fear I'm leaking amniotic fluid....

  • I find that I leak, too. I don't think its fluid though, I think it's just clear CM. I've gotten it for a while now and usually wear a panty liner. I usually get between a dime and a half dollar size spot on my panties (sometimes bigger). I had a checkup yesterday and everything looked good.

If you're concerned then call the dr tomorrow. GL!

  • I feel like mine are constantly damp. I even change throughout the day most days. I think it's normal...? I've seen other posts about this, too. I know some ladies wear liners every day.

I would venture to say you're fine. Sounds exactly like what I have going on :)

  • I am really wet most of the time. Great for sex...not for panties. I wouldn't be too worried. At one point a cpl weeks ago i thought i might be leaking amniotic fluid but it just went away. To reassure you further from what i understand amniotic fluid regenerates itself every three hours. Your body is constantly producing it.

  • Thank you so much girls. At least I can breathe now. I will still call the Doc tomorrow just to be safe, but at least I'm not as worried as I was a few minutes ago. You girls are lifesavers....what would I do without you all! Love to you! :)

  • Yes! I am thinking it's sweat at night though
  • Sounds like it could just be normal.. but I'd go ahead with your plan of calling. They can tell if it's fluid or not with a test strip... if it's leaking at all, I'd think it'd a big deal but I could be totally wrong.

  • From what the PP's said, it's probably totally normal but it wouldn't hurt to call just to put your mind at ease.  If anything they can do a simple test to rule it out!

  • When I am very hydrated my lady parts stay VERY well lubricated and since I've been pregnant it's been crazy how much moisture I have in my undies. I usually wear a pantyliner.

However, I would definitely call the doctor if it seemed that the discharge had increased or changed at all in appearance, smell, consistency, etc.

I had a friend lose one of her twins because she ignored the problem (she thought it was normal) and as it turned out she had an incompetent cervix. Not saying that to scare you...it's just one of those things I try and stay super duper aware of.

Good luck! Let us know what the doctor says.  :)

I am always of the "call!" school of thought because of things like this. How awful for your friend...

  • Definitely call to make sure. It's probably nothing, but last pregnancy, I was leaking some and didn't think much of it. Then, at 19 weeks, my water completely broke. I developed an infection and had to deliver my son a week later. So it is something that worries me now. They can do a quick swab to let you know.

  • It's probably just watery CM.  I've had a lot of CM and sometimes it gets quite damp down there.  I would think (note: I'm not a doctor) you would have some spotting and/or cramping if you were leaking fluid.

  • You should still check with your doc if you are concerned, but here's an article that should help give you some peace of mind until then:

     Good luck :)

  • I agree to call just to be safe, but to put your mind at ease I thought the same thing when pregnant with my DS (as a matter of fact the wet spot was on my jeans a little too) and it turned out to be just a lot of watery CM/sweat. I think they told me to put on a pad and if it is soaked through within an hour or less to go to the ER. I am sure it is nothing but they will be able to tell you what it is with a quick check.

  • From what I have read, pregnant women produce a whitish vaginal discharge that is meant to protect the uterus from infection during pregnancy.  Apparently the further along you are, the worse it gets, so pads or liners are helpful.  As long as there is no strong odor associated with the discharge, it sounds normal.

There *can* be spotting or cramping with an incompetent cervix, but sometimes the leak is so small that the only symptom is the actual fluid leak itself. Like PP said, a quick swab is all it takes for a little peace of mind, so never ever hesitate to get yourself checked if you have any suspicious or increased discharge.

It's so much better to be safe than sorry because there's just no reversing the problem or going back once it gets to a certain point.
