If you've been through RSV...

We took LO in to the pedi this morning. She had been congested and running a fairly high fever of around 101 for about 24 hours. Pedi mainly wanted to see us because she was tugging her ears, and yup she did have an ear infection. However, before we left she told me to be on the lookout for RSV symptoms because it sometimes starts as more of a cold. She said her breathing would be kinda like Darth Vadar, but honestly I'm listening to her now and isn't that the sound everyone makes when they have to breathe through their mouth due to congestion? Anyway, just wondering if someone here had been through it and could give more clarity that made it more than just cold symptoms for LO. We are supposed to come back anyway on Friday if the fever doesn't break and symptoms don't generally improve.

Re: If you've been through RSV...

  • My daughter had RSV at four weeks.  Her symptoms started out like a cold.  As a matter of fact, when I called the pedi, I was told not to bring her in after describing her symptoms because it sounded like a cold and there wouldn't be anything they could really do for her.  Twenty-four hours later breathing sounded horrible and her chest was retracting and I took her to the ER.  Retracting looks like the skin around the rib cage is getting pulled in with each breath.  It's a sign of respiratory distress. She was admitted and was on oxygen support for 5 days.  The younger the baby is, the more dangerous it is.  Hope your LO doesn't have RSV and gets better soon!
