Our main twin-hauling vehicle will be our Mazda 5. It has a fold-down 3rd row, which will always be in use by our 7 and 11 year-olds. When the 3rd row is in use, the storage space in the back is only as wide as a paper grocery bag (specs say 5.5 cubic feet). We can fit two carry-on luggage bags if we arrange just right. A single stroller can fit, but I'm doubtful I can squeeze a double in there.
A larger vehicle is not an option right now as the car is paid off and I'm already having insomnia thinking about how much we're going to pay for childcare here in LA and can't deal with adding a car payment to that.
I have no idea what to do for a stroller. Anyone have any ideas? Could any of your strollers fit in front of the 2nd row seats (in front of and under the infant carseats)?
Re: Anyone else with little trunk space?
Look at umbrella style SBS strollers- they'll be your best bet. My Maclauren folds up amazingly small. I've fit it behind the 3rd row in my mom's minivan, as well as in the trunk of my Hyundai Accent without problems.
I don't know anything about different kinds of strollers, but I'm wondering if a roof rack system would work for you? I have a tiny car (Chevy Aveo) and the only reason it functions for DH, the dog, and I is because we put a box on top for any trip requiring us to be gone for a few days. I'd be willing to bet we could fit the double stroller we have (Graco Duo Glider) in the box if we tried. At any rate, you could have the extra storage of the box even if the stroller took up the whole back of your Mazda. Roof rack systems (made by Yakima and Thule) are pricey, as was the box. They can go on virtually any vehicle though. A system plus a box would probably run you at least $600. But they are such a lifesaver! That said, DH is negotiating on a minivan as I type. We'll be able to use the box on it, too.
