3rd Trimester

Heartburn waking me up

A couple of times per night.  It's awful!!  Am I the only one experiencing this?  I have to get up at least three times per evening to take a tums so I can sleep again.

Re: Heartburn waking me up

  • I tend to be so tired when I go to bed that nothing can wake me up! Well, except my acorn-sized bladder... LOL.

But yeah, my heartburn has been KILLER for the past 2 or 3 months. I don't even have to eat anything to get it! All I know is this baby better have a headful of hair. Haha!

  • I've actually found my heartburn flares up when my stomach is empty. I keep soda crackers by my bed & eat 4-5 in the middle of the night to calm my stomach.

  • You are far from alone! I keep the tums next to the bed. DH once asked me why I was playing dice at 2am. No dice, just the sound of me shaking my tums out of the container. I used to just lay them out on the nightstand, but turns out the dog really has a taste for them.

  • Ask your OB if prevacid or prilosec is appropriate for you to take. You shouldn't be waking up to deal with heartburn!

I've been on Prilosec since first tri and I can't imagine being with out! It's a pill you just take once a day to keep heartburn away.

  • I have had to sleep sitting up every night this week because of it hitting me in the middle of the night.  I even take a preventative tums before bed but it still kills me.  I usually get it if I go to bed without eating but I make sure I do.  Blah.

  • I had to start taking Zantac in the evening so I don't wake up from my throat being on fire.

  • I've had it almost every night for the past few weeks too, untill this pregnancy I had NEVER had heartburn. And it stinks! It will all be worth it though when we have our babies in our arms! Hope it gets better for you.

  • One word: ZANTAC!

  • I take some Mylanta before bed to prevent this. It helps most of the time.

  • Last night was my first episode and I started crying about an hour into it. Burning throat, noises coming from my belly through my throat that make me sound possessed, and no sleep. It was awful. I ended up falling to sleep sitting up because Tums didnt work and I couldnt lay on my side. I will definitely be checking out Zantac.

  • I feel like I have the worst heartburn in the world while pregnant.  Finally a few weeks ago after waking up choking on my own reflux several times a night, I begged the midwife for help.

She just said to take Pepcid before a meal.

I don't know why I never tried that before but it has worked miracles! And of course I'm avoiding:

all red sauces, spicy foods, red wine (not even tiny sips), chocolate and ANY coffee.

I also don't eat after 7 p.m. almost ever, and I sleep practically sitting up.  I can't wait to NOT have heartburn!!!

  • Me too!

  • I've been having terrible heartburn/acid reflux too. My doc said it was okay to take zantac every day and to also keep a bottle of Maalox next to the bed. I probably go through a bottle every week and a half. I also started sleeping on two people and cut out spicy foods, tomatoes, and citrus. Water was really bad for me too, so I tend to use it to dilute fruit juices that don't bother me. All of that in combination has helped, but I still have it some. You can also see our little girl's hair in the ultrasound, so I guess the old wives tales are true. :)

  • Me too! Last night I thought I wasn't going to sleep at all thanks to heartburn! I think I ate too much at dinner lol.

  • Same here!  I fall asleep ok but a few hours later I wake up with horrible heartburn!  It keeps me up for at least an hour before I can fall back asleep.  I haven't tried taking anything; just drinking water (I wake up parched) and propping myself more upright with pillows.  Maybe I'll try Tums tonight!
