The most important thing will be the confidence you exude at your wedding. Your FMIL should know that but oh well. Now is a good time to start setting boundaries.

  • Didn't she get to pick out her own dress for her wedding? Hmm It's your day and you should wear what you want. The dress is beautiful (though I kinda feel like the necklace is a littl bit much for the halter part). So I say wear it. I love its clean lines.

I am a HUGE advocate of boundaries, as I have had WAY too many older women in my life try to shove right past all of them.  If you don't set them, you will be caught up in trying to appease her for the ROYL!!!

Paying for half and my mom is paying for half, I do love the dress, I just don't want to hear, "well, I didn't like it", or "why did you get that one?".... I guess I'm a bit of a push-over when it comes to Jon's mom, there isn't many ppl I let get under my skin but she does....

  • I think it is very pretty (skip the necklace).

Have you tried it on yet?

I went in with ideas of what I wanted but changed my mind when I got to trying them all on (it was so much fun).

Also, it is YOUR dress. The right one is the right one, it will make you feel like a princess. Once you get "set" on a dress, there isnt really any mind changing.

*so if you havent went to try them on, only try ones on in your price range.

    Words of wisdom.

But if you are getting married in a church, make sure her objection isn't the bare shoulders. Because if it is, she has a point. I wore a bolero over my strapless gown, and could have taken it off as soon as we left the sanctuary. However, I was also covering a HUGE mucking tattoo I don't share with people.

ETA: Old-fashioned? Maybe. but it's about respect.

I get what you mean about getting married in a church but luckily, I'm getting married lakeside and coming up on a boat :)

You want to know what is funny?

This was MY wedding dress so I think it is GORGEOUS. It is a very flattering cut. I have a bit of a muffin top and some junk in the trunk and this dress was slimming and wonderful. I had my dress in white and apple red sash... which matched all the bridesmaids and groomsman. It was just so pretty.

You really have to see it in person - it is BEAUTIFUL! My mom was not a big fan of this dress from the picture but then she went with me to David's and saw it on and just cried. She just said "that is it.... that's the dress."

SO I say GET IT! You will not regret it.

I can't believe it! Haha, I also thought of getting the sash red or black because my colors are white, black and red :)

Sounds like you love it!  I say make a game of it.  Every time she says something negative about your dress put $5 dollars in a jar.

Then on your honeymoon you might have a fat stash of money to buy something amazing!!!

  • It's a beautiful dress.  In terms of choosing a dress, it's your day and 100% your decision.  Speaking from experience though, I wanted a tank style dress, without much beading, embellishment and I wanted white, not ivory before I actually went dress shopping.  My MOH encouraged me to try on a ton of different styles.  I was adamant that I not have a strapless gown, but she had me try a few on anyway

Well, it turns out that tank style, looked absolutely horrible on me (not as bad as halter style- hilarious, but pretty bad) and that white was a bad colour for my skin tone.  I ended up getting an ivory strapless, princess ballgown with tons of embellishments and beading that looked absolutely horrible on the hanger, but was made for me.  My advice is to go in with some idea of what you like, but be open minded and try on lots of different styles.  When I was shopping it was just my MOH and I (all my family is hours away from me).  When I came out of the changeroom with my dress on, all the other moms in the shop were saying how beautiful I looked and when I saw myself in the mirror, I cried.  When you see your dress, you will know.  Happy shopping.

  • I think it's beautiful.  And, I'm with everyone else.  This wedding is about you and FI, and the dress is all about you.  Don't let FMIL sway you away from something you obviously love.  Be respectful to her, but let her know this is not her decision.  She only gets to share her opinion and have it considered, she doesn't get to make the decisions.

HAAHAAHAA! i had a very tight budget (we were in grad school and determined to pay cash for everything, no wedding debt), and I wanted simple, tasteful, and elegant. I found out that simple, tasteful, and elegant is wedding for expensive. So, I ended up with Quinceanera Flash.

Funny thing is, it worked. I looked great.

    hahaha, aye Caramba!

My heart is as open as the sky.

  • I absolutely love that dress.  I almost bought that exact one for my wedding.  The only reason I didn't was that I couldn't get the sash in the color I wanted in the "short" size (I'm only 5'1).

And I agree, it's your dress, and nobody else's.  So if you love it, go for it! :)

It's a beautiful dress.

HAAHAAHAA! i had a very tight budget (we were in grad school and determined to pay cash for everything, no wedding debt), and I wanted simple, tasteful, and elegant. I found out that simple, tasteful, and elegant is wedding for expensive. So, I ended up with Quinceanera Flash.

Funny thing is, it worked. I looked great.

I got my dress from the bargain basement of the Bridal shop,   It was a 2006 dress and was the sample (I got married in 08).  It fit me perfect off the rack, only required hemming and cost a whopping $250 (regular retail was $1250).  I spent almost the same on my headpiece and veil!  It was a steal and the only reason it was there when I was shopping was because it was hideous on the hanger!

It's not my style. But if you LOVE it what is the question? Just get the dress you love that also makes you feel amazing and lovely. The most important thing will be the confidence you exude at your wedding. Your FMIL should know that but oh well. Now is a good time to start setting boundaries.

This! If YOU love the dress than GO FOR IT. Your wedding day should be all about you and your FH.

I agree with going with a rough idea but being open to other options. I didn't think I wanted a train or a lot of embellishments and I had a dress I liked in mind but then found myself in a little bridal boutique that I'd never even heard of before and ended up falling in love with an Alfred Angelo dress with a semi-cathedral length train, and lots of gorgeous beading on the bodice, dress bottom and train. Best part was it fit like a glove off the rack and was only $99 (normally 2K plus) Why so cheap? Some of the beading work was loose on the bodice and they couldn't seem to sell it. DH's grandmother used to make dresses, and so a $4.99 container of beads and some grandma magic later it was perfect!

Best buy of the wedding right there!

  • At the end of the day, it is your dress!  Choose what you love.

The first time out, my MIL didn't like my dress in the store.  She had to go home and think about it.  When looking at pictures, she says she is glad I didn't listen to her b/c she loves my dress now.

It is a beautiful, timeless dress.  Follow your heart and she will come around.  Even if she doesn't, I doubt she will say anything the day of.

  • It's not exactly my style but it is pretty and I'm sure it looks amazing on you! And the most important thing is if you love it. My sister didn't like my dress and thought it looked like a giant doily...but that didn't stop me from wearing it!

This is a good point. If she is just trying to control what you wear to control what you wear, I say eff that. It's your wedding day, which, if you do it right, you only get to do once. So you should feel beautiful and confidant.

On the other hand, Petra has a point. If her objection is because of where you are going to be getting married such as in a church, where bare shoulders could become an issue, maybe compromise and wear a shawl or a bolero type jacket on top.

That being said, I still say get the dress you want. GL!

  • I think you should go with whatever dress YOU love.  I had a very small ceremony and wore a light green dress from Target.  My mother was appalled, but hey, it was what I wanted. :]
